  • News: Music Premiere: Toby Martin's Post-You ..
“No one gets a second chance to start again,” sings Toby Martin, ironically perhaps, on ‘Postcard from Surfers’, his first solo release post-Youth Group. The track – a finely sketched portrait of a man at a crossroads set to strings – hails from Martin’s forthcoming debut full-length Love’s Shadow , which was co-produced and engineered by long-time collaborator Tim Kevin and mixed in Nashville by Mark Nevers (Bonnie “Prince” Billy, The Silver Jews). Written across Sydney and New York, it’s a collection of character-based songs focused on “the interior thoughts of impressionistically-sketched protagonists”. Currently on hiatus, Youth Group released four ...

    >>It's Tax Day! Well, it is for all you procrastinatin' slackers out there, at least. Google Play is having a sweet little flash sale on some albums (there's some old school Weezer in there!). Also seen: LCD Soundsystem, The Black Keys, and David Bowie, among others. I'm about to go digitally stock up. Only $2.99! Uh oh, iTunes, you might have some competition. >>Got this sweet little musical treat in the gmail : Viceroy 's remix of St. Lucia 's "Closer Than This." Hey, if you're gonna tempt me with album art that makes me think ...

  • Machinemachine Releases “Mysteries” Album ..
After a slow gestation Mysteries, Machinemachine’s sophomore album, has hit stores today. The Sydney quintet was recorded in a sandstone bunker in mid-2010 and completed at an urban warehouse in 2011. Producer Tim Kevin (Youth Group, Peabody) worked closely with Machinemachine founder and frontman Joseph Leonard to ensure the disc sounds just right. The result [...]

  • REVIEW: Mychildren Mybride – Self-titled
Artist: Mychildren Mybride Album: Self-titled Genre: Metalcore Label: Solid State The realm of Christian metalcore is one of the most peculiar communities you can encounter in the music world. Most assume it to be a collection of artists and bands passionate about spreading their beliefs, but more often than not it’s a mixed bag of the truly passionate, the cliche, and the “not talented enough for the mainstream, so we promote Jesus in order to get booked outside of basements.” Even the most talented bands in this genre generally have to spend years fighting through the ranks of youth ...

  • Getting There: A Perfect Night For Flying Ca ..
Kevin Braheny & Tim Clark : A Perfect Night for Flying Carpets [ purchase ] We haven't posted much ambient music on SMM. Maybe all we need is this one and you can easily extrapolate, heh. It's from a collection from the syndicated radio show Music From the Hearts of Space , created way back in 1973 and that features "space" music. The show's format segues the songs one into the other (often making it sound like one long song), bookended by the calm and ethereal voice of host Stephen Hill, who sounds so serene that he should be the guy who ...

  • The Drums - Live at the O2 Academy, Bristol ..
The Drums, previously our top tip for 2010 surely proved themselves to be ones to watch with their self titled debut album bringing beach scenes to our chilly winter. After a change of line up when Adam Kessler left the band and a year of non stop touring they were ready to swiftly release their second album ‘Portamento’ reaching critical claim. There’s been a lot of hype around The Drums since they reached our shores and tonight it’s time for them to prove themselves to the Bristol Academy crowd. The line up has definitely changed, moving Jacob known ...

  • British India + King Gizzard and The Wizard ..
I hadn’t been to see a show at the Gaelic Club in Surry Hills in quite some time. Upon arrival, before I could even grab a tasty beverage, I was transfixed by the sound and energy of Betty Airs . Featuring (but not limited to) Darren Cross (Gerling) and Patrick Matthews (ex-Vines, Youth Group), these guys put on an incredibly upbeat, energetic performance with their own brand of surf/punk rock. read more

  • News: Sydney’s Songs: ‘We’re Back In Action’ ..
Sydney’s Songs may’ve lost two members last year, but the band is back in action, drafting in three new recruits and writing material for their forthcoming second album. Drummer Steve Uren and guitarist Jeff Burch left the band in late 2010, but singer-guitarist Max Doyle and bassist Ela Stiles have since soldiered on, drafting in Ben James (ex-Talons) on drums, Cameron Emerson-Elliot (Community Radio, Youth Group) on guitar and Jules Ferrari (ex-Black Ryder) on keys. The new line-up will be unveiled for the first time at soon-to-be-closed Sydney venue Tone on September 8. Speaking to M+N , Stiles ...

  • 11:45 Toby Martin of Youth Group talks about ..
Toby Martin is the founding member of the pop band Youth Group. Toby was researching his PhD on the history of Australian country music at the University of Sydney when he came across the music of Dougie Young. Young was an indigenous country singer who was well known and well loved in his local Wilcannia area. But not many outside that community knew about his music. Toby has used the National Library of Australia's archival recordings of Australian country music to bring Dougie's music back to us. Toby's managed to combine a scholarly interest in Australian country ...
