“No one gets a second chance to start again,” sings Toby Martin, ironically perhaps, on ‘Postcard from Surfers’, his first solo release post-Youth Group. The track – a finely sketched portrait of a man at a crossroads set to strings – hails from Martin’s forthcoming debut full-length Love’s Shadow , which was co-produced and engineered by long-time collaborator Tim Kevin and mixed in Nashville by Mark Nevers (Bonnie “Prince” Billy, The Silver Jews). Written across Sydney and New York, it’s a collection of character-based songs focused on “the interior thoughts of impressionistically-sketched protagonists”. Sydney’s Songs may’ve lost two members last year, but the band is back in action, drafting in three new recruits and writing material for their forthcoming second album. Drummer Steve Uren and guitarist Jeff Burch left the band in late 2010, but singer-guitarist Max Doyle and bassist Ela Stiles have since soldiered on, drafting in Ben James (ex-Talons) on drums, Cameron Emerson-Elliot (Community Radio, Youth Group) on guitar and Jules Ferrari (ex-Black Ryder) on keys. Toby Martin is the founding member of the pop band Youth Group. Toby was researching his PhD on the history of Australian country music at the University of Sydney when he came across the music of Dougie Young. Young was an indigenous country singer who was well known and well loved in his local Wilcannia area. But not many outside that community knew about his music.
