  • Dick Clark: the underground's unlikely champ ..
As host of American Bandstand, Dick Clark was responsible for smuggling subversion into US homes It is easy to think of Dick Clark , who died on Wednesday, as a real square, standing dead centre in the cultural median, slick and mainstream, ageless and rocking a perdurable deep Californian tan and a haircut that didn't change in the 33 years that American Bandstand , the music show he hosted, was on the air. Looking at him now from the distance of 2012, he seems like a relic of another innocent time. Perhaps he was. He was prescient; understanding how impactful rock ...

  • Raised on Danzig and 4AD: The Dark Pop of Jo ..
On A Wolf In Preacher’s Clothes, the forthcoming album by Jon DeRosa, you’ll notice a kinship with Children of Walker">Scott Walker like Nick Cave and Jarvis Cocker, hints of John Cale’s Paris 1919, and maybe even some connection to John Doe of X. It’s easy to call this chamber pop, but it’s much more textured than [...]

  • News: Steve Lucas To Retire X: ‘This Is The ..
Once dubbed “the band they couldn’t kill”, the legendary X will finally be laid to rest. The news was announced by Steve Lucas – the band’s last remaining original member, following the deaths of Ian Krahe, Ian Rilen and Steve Caferio. Lucas said the release of a compilation of “lost” recordings from 1977 through recently defunct Melbourne label Aztec provided the closure he needed to call time on the band. “Since the release of X-Spurts I feel I have done all that I could for X and the memory of Ian Krahe, Ian Rilen and Steve Caferio (as well ...

In his keynote address at the Australian Music Prize in Sydney on March 8, 'Rolling Stone' US senior editor David Fricke reveals how he found his thrill for Australian rock’n’roll on Strawberry Hill(s). Transcribed by HUGH ROBERTSON , reprinted by express permission of The AMP. Anyone who knows me knows I’m a hardcore New Yorker. I love the idea that I can jump on the subway a block from my apartment, get off at 34th Street, ride the escalator up to Madison Square Garden and then see U2 and Bruce Springsteen blow the roof off the place ...

  • X - "The Unheard Music": Interview with Aliz ..
Silver Anniversary Edition Liner Notes from Director W. T. Morgan: A quarter-century ago THE UNHEARD MUSIC premiered at Sundance. To get there, Angel City Productions – Chris Blakely, Everett Greaton, Alizabeth Foley and I – spent a lifetime in wolf years shacked up with X and their uniquely charged punk poetry. We found kindred spirits in John Doe, Exene Cervenka, Billy Zoom and D. J. Bonebrake, and tried to capture lightning in a bottle during that electrifying run when they made Los Angeles, Wild Gift, Under the Big Black Sun and More Fun in the New World. This was our first film ...

  • Musical Couples: Exene Cervenka & John Doe ..
X : White Girl [ purchase ] When I graduated from high school in 1978, rock radio in New York still mostly played classic rock, even on the now legendary WNEW-FM, which was tamer than in its true heyday, but still played a little broader selection of music. We really didn’t hear much punk music, but some of the “new wave,” like Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson began to infiltrate the playlists. At some point that year, WPIX-FM began to focus on playing new wave (their slogan was, “From Elvis to Elvis”), but by the time it was beginning to get some ...

doyenne \doi-EN\, noun: A woman who is the senior member of a group, class, or profession. Doyenne only came into common English use in the early 1900s, but it originates in the Old French word deien, which is also the root of the word dean. The suffix -enne is a French suffix for a personal female noun. iFinger It's the finger(s) you purposely keep clean when you eat something messy so you could operate your touchscreen smartphone/tablet/GPS without making the screen look like your plate. • John Doe Live on KCRW – Never Enough
While watching John Doe harmonizing beautifully with singer Cindy Wasserman, I couldn’t help thinking how he ALWAYS has a female counterpart, starting with Exene Cervenka (also his ex-wife) in legendary LA punk band X. After his set, I couldn’t resist asking him why. John said he wants to tell the “other side of the story”. I asked how he finds his collaborators – if they just happen upon each other or if it’s a process. He says he actively seeks out specific singers, particularly ones he’s worked with before, and he ...
