  • A guide to 'The Sisters of St. Anthony' by J ..
Jack Hayter 's new 'Sisters of St. Anthony' singles series continues with the temptingly titled 'Farewell Jezebel'. For this ramshackle folkabilly number, Jack reunites with his former Hefner bandmates Darren Hayman and Antony Harding. In keeping with the theme of the patron saint of lost things, this entry calls to mind those we love, loathe and lose—and the things we dare not say about them. You'll laugh, you'll cry. And so on. Farewell Jezebel by Jack Hayter Farewell Jezebel Ah... the difficult second blog. A rather obvious tale about death...I don't write impenetrable words. I ...

  • Song Chain : Reconnez Cherie
Wreckless Eric : Reconnez Cherie [Purchase] Decades before marrying Rigby">Amy Rigby, Wreckless Eric recorded some of the great Stiff Records punk-pop singles of the late 70's including "(I'd Go The) Whole Wide World", "Veronica" and "Reconnez Cherie". As he details in his autobiography, A Dysfunctional  Success -The Wreckless Eric Manual, he eventually lost everything he earned to the bottle and moved to the French countryside for ten years. In his book you meet all kinds of famous characters including Ian Dury, Nick Lowe and Huey Lewis ( the tea boy at Stiff Records office the day Eric wandered in).

  • Song Chain: All I Want
Rigby">Amy Rigby : All I Want [ purchase ] Money may be what the Beatles and the Flying Lizards want, but in her song "All I Want," Rigby">Amy Rigby longs for something more basic: "Just a little something to show me that you care whether I live or die." On her first records (this one is from 1998's Middlescence ), Rigby specialized in these working class love-on-the-rocks songs, some with an alt-country sound, others -- like this one -- with a '60's girl-group feel. Rigby">Amy Rigby (nee McMahon) launched her career in the aftermath of her divorce from dBs drummer Will ...

  • Old music: Nick Lowe – I Knew the Bride (Whe ..
Here's a track from one of the great undersung pop craftsmen of the 70s, the 'Jesus of Cool' A friend of mine, in the months leading up to his wedding, became a tad obsessed with this song. After a few pints, he would almost inevitably lean forward, nudge you and reveal, confidentially, with a wicked grin: "I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll." There was no particular answer to this, although he continued in the same vein right up to his wedding day, and during the reception, still apparently relishing – ironically, of course – that lurking ...

  • Rotifer - Aberdeen Marine Lab
The last time Robert Rotifer and band (Darren Hayman and Ian Button ) appeared on here we described it as "a sepia-tinged sway". This time, produced by Wreckless Eric ahead of an album, The Hosting Couple, on Edwyn Collins' AED label, it's a mod-tinged glam-garage stomp of the kind Billy Childish might have been responsible for some time in the mid-80s. If, that is, he was given to writing about observation of fish.

  • Covergeist - Zombies, Vampires and Taylor Sw ..
I received this one in my inbox last week and I think the reason it has taken me so long to post anything yet is because I keep going back and listening to the album over and over and discovering new songs that I like. The album, appropriately named Zombies, Vampires and Taylor Swift Oh My!!! , is an eclectic mix of punk rock, alt country with a little bit of pop-punk splashed in. Sounds interesting I know, but wait til you hear it. My first impression after listening to the album was that it sounded like Wreckless Eric teamed up ...

  • MANCHESTER GIGS IN MUSIC: November 2011 Pt.1 ..
Gigs don't always have to be sweaty, rufty-tufty affairs as Jamie Harrison shows this month. His album launch - for the rather fine " Get Under The Carpet " - is at the genteel and bijou Art of Tea in Didsbury along with Rozi Plain and This Is The Kit . Of course if you want to get over-heated and strain your neck or legs, there's plenty of choice for that too. As ever a mixtape [54 mins / 62 MB] of bands playing Manchester this November to help inform your gig-going decision-making - link in the post below this one . Mcr Gigs In Music ...

  • Rotifer - Canvey Island
Produced by Wreckless Eric, released on Edwyn Collins' new label AED and featuring Darren Hayman in his band, Robert Rotifer has plenty of literate support for his storytelling style. On this first single from forthcoming album The Hosting Couple there's a deliberate nostalgia, based on real events from his youth of his first trip to England from his native Austria, emphasised by the sepia-tinged sway that sounds about right for this sudden heatwave, even if big drums are determined to stomp all over the ending. • Radar Tip Of The Day 75: Mikal Cronin
Bit of a sly new band tip this, I guess, seeing as Mikal Cronin's been on the fringes of San Francisco's nascent garage scene for a while. But I'm gonna do it anyway, 'cos his new solo album is all kinds of aceness and he's always been in the shadows until now. Out on Trouble In Minds, the album starts with 30 seconds of harmonies nicked straight out of Brian Wilson's back pocket, before turning into a mid-90s Evan Dando demo and then going haywire when a load of REALLY FUCKING LOUD drums kick in ...

  • The Postelles: Summer Undercovers
It’s been a busy summer for The Postelles. In June they released their first full length album. And as if that wasn’t enough (it wasn’t!) they gave the world a four track EP with covers of four songs that they love. Now they’re gearing up for a couple of different tours to close out summer and ride into fall including Midtown Music Festival in Atlanta, supporting The Wombats and then The Kooks in the US. Last week we alerted you to a free download of the Postelles‘ cover of the Smiths’ ‘Ask’. What we didn’t know was that they were going to offer up an entire EP of covers called ‘Summer Undercovers’ for free download, otherwise we would have clued you in to this bundle instead. It includes: ‘Ask’ (the Smiths Cover) ‘California Sun’ (Joe Jones Cover) ‘Whole Wide World’ (Wreckless Eric Cover) ‘Beat on the Brat’ (The Ramones Cover)...
