Woodsman recently lost a drummer and decided to go in a new direction, and this live set incorporates more sampling and simpler percussion, but the swirling, epic guitar landscapes remain. The band says they recorded it in a new venue in Savannah, Georgia, which is in an old church that looks like a high school cafeteria. Splintered relationships are common enough in the songs of Ellen Kibble, but they’re outnumbered by the spectres of water and death. The NSW native, who moved to Melbourne five years ago and last month relocated to Vancouver, has described her work as “melancholy sea-folk” as well as “clipped accounts of pulling apart and coming together.” Sure enough, these are discreet vignettes flecked with banjo and mandolin while topped with Kibble’s glum sigh and seaward storytelling. Woodsman is a band that is unrepentent if their psych sojourns come off as pretentious, as it is for them to expand their own horizons and see what takes shape. Their past releases have all been good (especially their earlier, lo-fi productions), and it's not likely to change. A giant jam session that goes wherever it goes, nothing can be taken for granted.
