  • The Common Pursuit
I was ready to completely dismiss The Common Pursuit at the end of the first act, but the second one navigated some interestingly troubled waters. (Click here for my review .) Incidentally, can we stop with the paper-thin female characters already? Don't insult us with that crap: If you're only interested in the male experience, go the John Woo way and dispense with women entirely. http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping

  • Regina Spektor: "What We Saw From the Cheap ..
Every Spektor">Regina Spektor record has a bunch of songs that are quirky and endearing.  However, every Spektor">Regina Spektor album also has a batch of songs that are either monotonous or brimming with self-indulgent vocal runs and other nonsense. So will the new studio album, What We Saw From The Cheap Seats  (out May 29th), fair any differently? The start is very promising.  The album opener "Small Town Moon" begins as a standard Spektor piano number.  She jerks you out of the moodiness part way through with a completely unexpected 'woo!'.  That signals the song's transition into a ...

  • Exclusive: LetTheMusicPlay ‘All I Can Give Y ..
When an artist decides to obscure their name from their music it's always a risk - at the beginning there's excitement, but the most important point of the ruse is when all is revealed. A difficult skill to master. Unfortunately today isn't the day we find out who Letthemusicplay are. I know, I know, we were as disappointed as you. We tried to woo the PR with all the charm and wit of Skrillex, but still nothing.

First, from The Quietus , word that Guns N’ Roses has requested the front row be populated with attractive ladies who, later in the evening, the band would woo: The Scottish Daily Record reports that GNR have requested that the front row at their forthcoming Glasgow concert is full of attractive women. The band have requested the ladies from the All Talent Sonia Scott Agency to “wow the band” as they perform, before joining them at an aftershow. A source told the newspaper, “The girls have… been invited to join Axl and the boys backstage for drinks and they’ve even ...

  • Ke$ha samples Blur
Blur fans should cover their eyes and ears now as it would appear that sassy American Ke$ha has sampled the legendary bands hit 'Song 2'. The fifty three second snippet has appeared online and sounds like Damon Albarn’s iconic “Woo Hoo” from the 90’s track has been sampled into the hook. ’Song 2’ was the second track on Blur’s self titled fifth album which ironically reached number 2 in the UK charts back in 1997. Ke$ha tweeted recently "Wailing on an epic track with Doctor Luke & Benny Blanco. This is the dawn of a new ...

  • Alexander Pankiv-Greene, a Londoner who now ..
Alexander Pankiv-Greene , a Londoner who now resides in Cape Town, has just put out his very solid debut album, Sea Songs . The 13 track effort introduces the listener to the acoustic tales of longing and curiosity that deeply interest the 17 year old. Everything on here has a slight jazzy aspect to it, making for a real nice change of pace, from your usual sad sack acoustic songs. Whether he’s referencing natural disasters on “Plate Tectonics” or trying to woo a French girl on “There Was Once A French Exchange Student”, the deeply talented musician should win you ever ...

  • San Francisco’s Future Twin have caught my a ..
San Francisco’s  Future Twin have caught my attention with their aggressive, angsty vocals courtesy of lead singer Jean Jeanie. On their debut 4 track, Situation , the band have the whole dirty rock thing on lock. The heavy guitar licks, and pounding percussion, easily keep pace with the chaotic vocal work. It all makes for a truly badass band. I wouldn’t think a band like this would  have a song called “<3”, but it easily is my favorite song off this EP, with a whole lo-fi asthetic taking over, and some poignant synth lines too woo any naysayer over ...

  • 33.2 - Yeah, and You Thought You Knew Me? ..
I don't know either. Woo, Friday night, party time! What'll it be tonight then, an indie disco floorfiller? Some fat, throbbing beats for us to get down to? A bit of The Boss to sing along to while getting pickled? No? Something which features domestic violence? Yes. Whipping Boy. We Don't Need Nobody Else is another song I turn to when alcohol influenced and in control of music, but usually not till the point where everyone is a bit too drunk, pals have passed out, pissed me off, or both, and I'm starting to hate everything ...

  • Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau: a guide in clips ..
The great German baritone has died at the age of 86. Watch these six examples of his performing, and tell us your thoughts Schubert's An die Musik Though he's slightly more formal in the television studio, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau had one of the most relaxed platform manners I have ever witnessed, perfectly putting the audience at their collective ease. The German Lieder repertory was his natural territory and Gerald Moore ("the unashamed accompanist") one of his most notable equal partners. Moore wrote of him: "His freedom and elasticity are not only influenced by the words he is singing but ...
