Wakey!wakey!

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Wakey!Wakey! is for the most part Michael Grubbs, as he plays piano and sings the vocals. However, the band is not a solo project and incorporates many more musicians to round out the sound, including strings, drums and horns. They hail from New York and release their music through F... Read More

  • Knife – 6 song EP
This may be less a story about a solid band than about a great city close to my heart.  And it’s not because the band is less deserving.  It’s because the story of the city is tightly interwoven with the raison d’etre of the band. The city is Detroit.  The band is KNIFE. You’d have to be living under a rock to be oblivious about the incredibly hard times D’town’s endured over the last several years, even before the bottom fell out of the auto industry in 2008.  Boarded up factories.  Boarded up schools ...

  • Wakey!Wakey! - Twenty Two (Honda CR-V Commer ..
Was just watching some TV when this new Honda CR-V "Marathon" leaplist commercial came on. Naturally my first reaction was to start laughing as I watched this poor girl awkwardly walk back to her car bow-legged like she had just run backwards through a corn field naked. I could only imagine the many scenarios that would make her walk in such a manner until the end of the commercial showed that she had actually just finished running a marathon, which makes a lot more sense and is a little more inspiring than where my mind had began to wander. One ...

  • BiIly Cotton Band
I have featured Billy Cotton several times and happy to do so again - being a strong memory of my childhood and youth when his radio and TV shows seemed to be all pervading! Very nostalgic memories of Sunday lunchtimes with the family sat down at the dining table and this playing in the background usually followed by Round The Horne or Ken Dodd. "William Edward Cotton (May 6, 1899 – March 25, 1969), better known as Billy Cotton, was a British band leader and entertainer, one of the few whose orchestra survived the dance band era. Today, he is mainly remembered ...

  • MANCHESTER GIGS IN MUSIC: October 2011 Pt.1 ..
One victim of the August riots was the independent music scene. The burning down of the PIAS distribution centre in Enfield destroyed huge amounts of physical stock from over 70 record labels. Label Love is the umbrella movement to support those labels and towards the end of the month The Ruby Lounge hosts the Manchester Label Love fundraiser night with The Narrows, Trojan Horse, Nine Tail and Tribal Fighters. A very different showcase for the independent and DIY music scene is the Carefully Planned Festival – two days of music over four venues in the Northern Quarter for the insanely cheap ...

  • Photos: To Kill a King at The Garage
Relentless Garage | Highbury, North London | 27 July 2011 All three of the London Ruckus ladies are partial to a little To Kill a King. Even so much that we will brave a boiling hot Relentless Garage in Highbury to see the band. They are recently signed to Virgin Records and have some Autumn tour dates with Wakey Wakey! If you've not heard of the band, embrace the glorious Americana-Folk with some pictures and a cheeky little SoundCloud embed. To Kill a King drew a big crowd to the sweaty pit that is The Garage, there was definitely a load ...

I grew up… underneath a grand piano that my mom taught lessons on. It was a very musical household, so by the time I was five she was teaching me. Now you can find me in… Brooklyn. Or on tour. We seem to tour a lot right now. And I love it. It all started [...]
