  • Interview: Wooden Wand
by Paulb • May 2012 At this point in his musically inclined career, you could probably build a small brick and mortar building devoted entirely to the catalog of James Jackson Toth. With nearly 100 releases to his name (and varied pseudonyms), Toth is one of the more prolific musicians of the last two decades. He’s recorded and released hours of solo material under his own name (as well as WAND and Wooden Wand), but he’s also played with countless bands and groups over the years and recorded and released nearly all of it. Last month saw the re-release ...

  • Hot Sugar, "0__0"
The name Hot Sugar has haunted me at every turn, since appearing on Big Baby Gandhi's No 1 2 Look Up mixtape. It took the form of a wizard wand in his video for "#MindControl". It took the form of a beat lent to Open Mike Eagle for his most recent EP. It took the form of lounging on a Cadaillac, sporting a mink, in Gandhi's "Been A Villain" video. (I'm also just learning he produced "Sleep" from The Roots' undun record.) Now, it's taken the form ...

  • Feature: Track By Track: Sui Zhen
Songs inspired by Malaysian monsoons, Karen Dalton and old shops in Redfern – Sydney-reared, Melbourne-born singer Sui Zhen (aka Becky Freeman) talks us through her new album ‘Two Seas’, which was recorded with Tony Dupe (Holly Throsby, Jack Ladder). With this first album, I took a “learn the rules before you break them” approach. I wanted to practice the art of classic songwriting, so that I could perform solo or with a band or even a cappella and the songs would still work. Once I learned how to do this, I could start to experiment and get a little weird. ‘My ...

Im Hintergrund der Refrain: " What does it take to be lonesome? Nothing at all! " Welches Ende das eigensinnige Geiseldrama nehmen wird, könnt ihr an ...

  • I've Made A Huge Mistake (2011 Edition)
I'm obsessed with year end lists.  It's always exciting to sit down at the end of the year and rank your favorite records, share with your friends/readers, and also see what others deemed the best of the year.  One problem always arises: give it a few months into the new year and three-four records for the past year will pop up and make you wish you had given them proper due.  I've decided to put an end to this "list regret" and will be doing an annual piece called "I've Made A Huge Mistake" where ...

  • MP3s: The Underground Man
In real life, The Underground Man licenses music to independent films and TV, though by the charming acoustic pop of "Hey Love" you'd assume he writes commercial jingles too. It's a concisely infectious effort with the swaying, full-bodied acoustic sound of Aztec Camera or early, more pop-oriented Sufjan Stevens efforts ("A Winner Needs a Wand")

  • New releases for the week of April 24, 2012 ..
In the wake of Record Store Day, it seems that there's another pretty big week of new releases to close out the month of April. Both Patton Oswalt and Paul F. Thompkins have new DVDs courtesy of Comedy Central, Ryan Adams and LP both have live sessions out, and electro clash remnants Soviet release "Life Begins at Retwirement" (pictured). Of course, that's just the start of things with new records from The Maccabees , The Dandy Warhols , and Toro Y Moi as well. We possibly couldn't mention them all here, and we hope we put as many as ...

  • Record Store Day: Rhode Island Update, Analo ..
I didn't see Analog Underground on the "official" Record Store Day list, but that may have been an oversight. I got the following oddly formatted message from the mysterious Mr. Analog Underground in my mailbox, looks like he will have some interesting stuff: Where do your records come from? I get this question alot.  I have a number of stock "record store guy" answers for this: The record tree, The Record Gods, Another dimension. I Usually go with "anywhere and everywhere," not only because it's true but  it's vague enough to confuse people.  Even though I truly ...

  • New releases for the week of April 17, 2012 ..
Things are going to be a little bit different this week. Sure, there's the usual batch of Tuesday releases, but a special event this weekend called Record Store Day will mean another slew are coming on Saturday. If you don't know what Record Store Day is, expect a whole bunch of limited edition (and mostly vinyl) records to be out in indie stores across the country. We try not to let our Tuesday radar down while we anticipate the weekend, so we hope you're still ready to hear about what's new now like Ana Lola Roman ...
