Vivian Girls

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Vivian Girls started in Brooklyn, NY in March 2007 as the trio of Cassie Ramone, Kickball Katy and Frankie Rose. While only a band for a short while, they recorded a demo CD-R which included five original songs and a Wipers cover, and began to play locally in Brooklyn and Katy and Ca... Read More

  • La Sera
La Sera is the solo project of Katy Goodman, one of the three Vivian Girls. The group has the same lo-fi Vivian Girls/Best Coast/Dum Dum Girls surf pop style – music that is reminiscent of a simpler, more innocent time of the past. Boyfriends, heartbreak, best friends; but with a heavy dose of 21st century [...]

  • MP3: Brick and Mortar
We've been keeping tabs on Mortar">Brick + Mortar. The young Jersey band has already laid the foundation for a formidable career with their emphatic performances, but this recording is the first time we feel like that attitude has been bottled and distributed properly. Check out "Bangs": Did you know Ali Khoeler (formally of Vivian Girls and Best Coast) is also from Toms River (where Mortar">Brick + Mortar hail from in the dirty Jerz)? What kind of indie rock powder do they put in the water there?

  • Deep Time
Here's the thing about Deep Time, this one caught me way off guard. Its true, I'd been familiar with Yellow Fever when that album came out via Vivian Girls' Wild World Records and honestly it just didn't hold my attention. It was pleasant enough but seemed like there were plenty of other similar statements shouting much louder at the time. It was too ramshackle, too lo-fi, too soft a punch. Which is what makes hearing Deep Time's eponymous album all that much sweeter. It seems to resolve all of the above criticisms. It cuts, scrapes and ...

  • Music Review: Black Tambourine - OneTwoThree ..
Black Tambourine OneTwoThreeFour [EP] [Slumberland; 2012] by Alex R Wilson Rating: These days, everybody seems to be getting back together. Whether it’s something in the air, this current generation’s infatuation with yesteryear (late 80s/early 90s reboot, now with less Skidz ), current project purgatory, reconciliation of feuding members, or boredom, there is little to indicate exactly why everyone is giving their old projects a second (or third) go. Maybe it’s for money; maybe it’s a way to reinsert their place in history — the case varies from band to band. None of these reasons really fit the ...

  • Brooklyn Bound: Frankie Rose Live at Convers ..
Frankie Rose, she of the Vivian Girls, Crystal Stilts and Dum Dum Girls, and now, her own, infinitely exciting solo material, is a joy to behold while at work, or at play, or whatever you … read more »

Frank YangWho: La Sera What: (Relatively) shinier but just as poppy side-project from Vivian Girls bassist Katy Goodman. Why: She’s touring in support of her second album Sees The Light, which was just released in March. When: Sunday, May 13, 2012 Where: The Shop Under Parts & Labour (19+) Who else: Not sure yet, to [...]

  • Guest Post: Frankie Rose – Interstellar
Frankie Rose by any other name would sound as sweet. At times she’s been called “A member of the Vivian Girls,” at others “The drummer for the Dum Dum Girls,” and on occasion “The drummer for the Crystal Stilts.” With the release of her remarkable new album Interstellar, “Frankie Rose” will soon be all that [...]

  • La Sera promotes flossing on US tour in May ..
Cut the crap, everyone! We’ve got to talk about flossing. Flossing is important. If you don’t do it, your gums will bleed. They will bleed and bleeding hurts! Nobody wants that. You know who (probably) flosses? Katy Goodman. The Vivian Girls bassist is someone who (probably) does not have bleeding gums. Ever heard of a Vivian Girls show that ended in a wave of gumblood? No, you haven’t. In her non-Vivian Girls time, Goodman’s been heading up her own, dream-poppier solo project, La Sera. Just in the last month, she put out her second La Sera ...

  • Frankie Rose proves far less dreamy at Satel ..
Frankie Rose has come a long way since her lo-fi days in female indie-pop armies such as Vivian Girls and the Dum Dum Girls, and her time in Crystal Stilts. She’s proved her pop-songwriting chops when she fronted her band the Outs a couple of years ago, but Rose has elevated her game further yet [...]

  • Is Vivian Girls now a La Sera Side Project? ..
La Sera’s Sees the Light (Hardly Art) gets the proper tour it deserves (see dates below), but here’s the question to ponder as La Sera hits the road: Has La Sera usurped Vivian Girls as Goodman’s main focus? Since this is 2012, and social media plays such a huge role in all of our lives, it is [...]

  • LA SERA – Sees The Light
(Hardly Art/Inertia) Perfectly paced and engaging songs, let down by an unsatisfying end Sees The Light is the second album from La Sera, aka Katy Goodman, who also plays bass for Vivian Girls. The first few songs of this album, notably Please Be My Third Eye and Break My Heart, might trick you into believing she’s staying with the spiky, fuzzed-out guitar pop that band does so well. However, Goodman soon settles into sunny, cleaner song writing that suits her sweet and laconic vocals perfectl ...

  • La Sera – Sees the Light
Those Vivian Girls sure get around. Each member of the Brooklyn lo-fi punk band has a seemingly endless array of solo and side projects, including “Kickball” Katy Goodman’s La Sera. In 2010, Goodman released her La Sera full-length LP as proof that she could still serve up the goods without the other gals. Now Goodman [...]

  • School Knights
Those snotty slackos School Knights have a couple new tunes floating around the ether. After the disappointing news that the fucking rad SK/Night Manager split isn't likely to materialise, it's good to hear these guys are still throwing their shit at their teenage bedroom walls. Take that, MOM! Yeah, these two tracks in particular play the Wavves card, but when the flat-brim cap fits... It's goddamn catchy, a veritable KFC bucketload of fun, plus it's a bit meatier - the duo of Michael Stein and Zack Roif are now a foursome, thanks to Morris Kolontyrsky and ...

  • 405 Record Store Day Preview: Brighton
Having only lived in Brighton a year, I literally missed last years Record Store Day here by just a handful of days much to my disappointment, especially having moved from a town that didn't even have an indie record store. So not only will this be my first experience of the day in Brighton, it'll also be the first time that I'm able to attend the event. Moving to a town cited the second most musical in the world according to SXSW, means that we're not short of stores to camp outside of on the day ...
