The Big Pink Future This [4AD; 2012] by Art Ivan Rating: Future This , the new album from London duo The Big Pink, goes decidedly — and somewhat oddly — against what one might expect from a second album, especially from a band that issued a debut of massive-sounding sonic proportions back in 2009, the much-lauded but still critically controversial A Brief History of Love . Unlike that first album, there is no opener to match the powerful, portentous gravity of “Crystal Visions” or, for that matter, any tracks that rival the near-brutal ferocity of “Velvet” or the anguished high drama of its title ...

The Big Pink played four tracks from their new album, ‘Future This’, plus one of their past hits for their record label 4AD special gig series. The songs played are as follows: ‘Stay Gold’, ‘Hit The Ground (Superman)’, Velvet’ (a hit single from 2009′s ‘A Brief History of Love’), ‘Rubbernecking’ and ‘Give It Up’. While this new batch doesn't have anything as catchy as "Dominoes" or contemplative as "Velvet", The Big Pink dials up it's flair for Cure-esque anthemic 80s-pop right off the bat with a one-two opening salvo of "Stay Gold" and "Hit The Ground (Superman)". On "Give it Up" Furze and Cordell get blippy with their elctrodes and a could-be female chorus which I suspect is their voices modulated to high heaven.

Ahead of the release of their second album, Future This , The Big Pink have recorded a set of five songs as part of the 4AD Sessions series. Bringing to life the anthemic qualities of the new album, the session is a showcase of the unabashed step towards stadium dynamics the band have made on Future This , while also displaying the often-curveball influences that continue to underpin their best work. London pop-punkers the Big Pink took some time to "reflect on the good times" after 2009's A Brief History of Love and poured the results into their second album Future This , due January 17 via 4AD. I loved the fuzzy guitars and synthy pop of The Big Pink’s 2009 debut “A Brief History of Love”, especially the track “Dominos”.
