  • Brian’s Mixtape: Rain
Good afternoon, friends, Naturally owls know better than to get caught in the rain, so I am fluffed up by the fire with a hot buttered rum. Since you’re probably about to brave the outside with one of those horrific umbrella things that don’t even keep the water off your middles, I thought I’d be kindly and provide the perfect soundtrack to a wet afternoon. Yours cosily, Brian Rainy days on Spotify. Barry Louis Polisar – All I Want Is You Alexi Murdoch – All My Days Foxes">Fleet Foxes – Battery Kinzie Athlete – Beautiful Doves – Black And White Town ...

  • Luke Leighfield – New Season
In the biography of Luke Leighfield , which reads like a CV, his fourth album New Season is described as his most accomplished work to date, comparing the sound to both Coldplay and Mates of State. Instantly there was a surge of curiosity as to where in between these two artists we would find the sound of New Season . Released through Got Got Need, which Luke owns and runs, he has performed live over 650 times in 14 countries since his first show in May 2005 at the Cricket Pavilion in Upton-upon-Severn. Frequently playing in fan's living rooms (through invitation ...

  • Turin Brakes - Live at The Leadmill, Sheffie ..
It has been ten years since Turin Brakes released the Mercury nominated ‘Optimist LP’. The raw, stripped back record has turned out to be Ollie Knights’ and Gale Paridjanian’s crowning achievement so far. The duo have arguably failed to better it over the last decade, with only 2003’s ‘Ether Song’ showing speckles of the brilliance that ran throughout their debut. To celebrate the anniversary, Turin Brakes have headed back out on the road to play the album in its entirety, and as they walk onto the Leadmill’s stage Paridjanian says: “We’re going to do it like ...

  • Run Dan Run releases the rare album that’s g ..
I don’t know of many people in the United States who still listen to Turin Brakes. The band is alive and kicking in Britain, but their U.S. moment in the sun came during the early ’00s with Ether Song during the melodramatic Brit-pop wave (Coldplay, Keane, Travis, etc.). For whatever reason, they didn’t have the [...]

  • Headstock Festival Returns
Not for profit festival Headstock has unveiled the first names on the line up for this summer's event. The decline of heavy industry in Britain left whole communities devastated. A small village near Nottingham, Newstead was almost completely dependent on a nearby coal mine to provide employment. Its closure in 1987 left the area in crisis. Since then, the community have banded together in an attempt to provide a future for the village of Newstead. Amongst the measures they have tried is a not for profit music festival. A way to bring the community together, Headstock was set up ...

  • THE MUSIC DIARY PROJECT: FRIDAY APRIL 8 Toda ..
THE MUSIC DIARY PROJECT: FRIDAY APRIL 8 Today I listened to ten different songs by ten different artists. I listened to only one of those songs — the Kaskade remix of Robyn’s “Call Your Girlfriend” — more than once. In honor of the other nine songs and for my final day with the Music Diary Project, I will express the remainder of my thoughts in haiku form. • Joy Division “Atmosphere” When I was younger I listened to many bands With dead lead singers • Rhett Miller “Haphazardly” I love Rhett Miller But that Chili’s commercial he sang makes me sad • Ida ...

  • [MP3] Zachary Cale: “Hello Oblivion” + “Mour ..
I’ve been waiting quite some time for a song like Zachary Cale’s “Hello Oblivion” to come around, reinforcing my (oft internally embattled) belief that “songs-that-would-have-been-on-The OC” (think Turin Brakes) are still being made. Nostalgia is beside me on this one. That alone should be enticing enough for you to want to listen. [...]
