  • Open thread: what are your favourite instrum ..
Tell us about tunes where the music does the talking "Shut up!" sang Kelly Osbourne back in 2002. "I don't want to hear your voice!" Sentiments we can all agree with from time to time. For much classical, jazz and electronic dance music, a lack of words is either unremarkable or entirely standard. But for the majority of pop and rock acts, the singer is usually the focus of a performance. There are exceptions, of course. In the 70s and 80s prog acts favoured elaborate guitar and synth lines over vocals, and in the 90s Slint, Tortoise and Mogwai ...

  • Victor Villarreal: Invisible Cinema
Victor Villarreal Invisible Cinema Joyful Noise Recordings [2012] Fire Note Says: Indie innovator Victor Villarreal steps out on his own with the engaging Invisible Cinema . Album Review: Victor Villarreal has always been considered a groundbreaking guitarist in the modern indie rock world with his captivating previous work in the bands Cap'n Jazz, Owls, Ghosts & Vodka, and more recently, Joan Of Arc. • Lobisomem - Onze Pedras/Onze Pedras Antirada ..
Brad Loving’s work in 2011 proved his talent, starting with his work as the field recorder behind the superb album Sababou (now available on vinyl – and worth picking up) and releasing a single EP and LP that showcased two sides of his music as Lobisomem . Now ready to drop an LP of remixes, the time to revisit the original, above mentioned, full length ( Onze Pedras ) before delving into its partner/twin Onze Pedras Atiradas is nigh. Generally speaking, the sounds used in each of Pedras ’s tracks remain the same: simple but effective synth beeps recalling the EMI Synthi ...

  • My favourite albums of 2011 (#25 Sun Araw - ..
Hmm, I'll have to admit, this feels a bit awkward and wayward of me, my starting this list now, six weeks later than I really ought to have done. Even that notorious tortoise Karl appears to be putting his list to bed over on those geese (it's an excellent list by the way; you all should read it, but come back here won't yis). The path ahead looks lonely and punishing as fuck...and to think I started blogging because I thought it would be fun. • Thrill Jockey to reissue Tortoise's entire f ..
I’m not entirely sure how the members of Tortoise decided on their name, but as far as animal representations go, it seems surprisingly congruous with the type of music that they create. Stop for a moment and think about your general perception of tortoises and their behavior; without referencing National Geographic or some other knowledgeable organization, I imagine tortoises spend their days moseying along at their usual pace, not giving a shit, but completely focused on the task at hand. Whether the task is munching on some delish greenery or circumnavigating a giant boulder unfortunately placed in middle of ...

  • Bloggy Goodness: Woody Guthrie’s Multitudes ..
Roughly two and a half years ago we reported that Jay Farrar (Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt), Jim James (MMJ) and Will Johnson (Centro-matic) had headed into the studio to a record a new batch of songs inspired by Woody Guthrie’s unrecorded lyrics, a la Billy Bragg and Wilco’s amazing Mermaid Avenue records. According to Paste , the trio were personally invited by Guthrie’s granddaughter, Nora, to sift through the songwriter’s notebooks and scratch pads to gain insight on the artist and his unfinished work. On February 28, the trio will help celebrate  Guthrie’s 100th birthday , which ...

  • News: In Brief: Phil Gionfriddo, Charles Du ..
    – Melbourne musician Phil Gionfriddo (Dynamo, The Bowers) is on the hunt for his prized 12-string Fender guitar after it went missing following a gig at Phoenix Public House in Melbourne on December 23. His 1966 Fender Electric XII was either left in a cab or swiped on the street on Sydney Road, Brunswick, after the show. The guitar is lime green with a tortoise shell scratch plate, a Fender Jazzmaster-style body and a “hockey stick” headstock. Its serial number is #172548. “This is a very precious guitar to me as I have done many recordings with it and I use ...
