Old Radio ShowMy old college radio station, WDCV at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, has started a tumblr blog to document the station's history in honor of its 50th anniversary year. Brenda Landis, the station's advisor, has posted some really interesting artifacts there, including audio from a radio show I did back on February 16th of 1989 (almost 23 years ago to the day). This Mortal Coil was a super group of 4AD artists masterminded by 4AD co-founder Ivo Watts-Russell. The band’s roster included, at various times, members of Cocteau Twins, Pixies, Throwing Muses and Dead Can Dance. They covered songs by Tim Buckley, Big Star and Roy Harper. In 1986, David Lynch attempted to license this “Song To The Siren” recording for Blue Velvet, but was foiled by a rights issue. [Faves] My Favorite Music of 2011Just about every comment I've read on the passing of 2011 boiled down to "good riddance". Not too shocking, since the internet was built for complaining after all (also - more than a few friends really were struggling), but I'm both surprised and very grateful to state that mine wasn't all that bad. Various Artists- Doctor Death's Volume I- Ce ..Here's a great (and pleasantly affordable) compilation chock full of post-punk and coldwave sounds from C'est La Morte. I believe there are five editions in this series, this being the only one I own. The rest seem promising as well, judging from the inclusion of Handful of Snowdrops, Bill Pritchard, Heavenly Bodies, Beautiful Green Pea Boat, Clair Obscur, etc. You can get volume 4 here . The story of these compilations dates back to C'est La Morte owner Woody Dumas, who used to have a radio program called Doctor Death, which specialized in cold/gothic sounds.
