  • The Law
It must be tough being in The Law. Lots of early promise and hype overshadowed by a somewhat underwhelming 2009 debut album (A Measure of Wealth), coupled with the ominous labeling of being Dundee’s “other” band (The View clearly holding bragging rights as of now, despite Kyle Falconer’s best attempts to usurp Liam Gallacher in [...]

  • Altsounds Interview: The View
After an intense, sweaty, vibrating and raw gig at the Room At The Top up in the Scottish city of Bathgate, Altsounds sat down with The View's bassist Kieren Webster and drummer Steven Morrison for a lightening interview that involved whisky shots, talking in Spanish, tales of a forgotten Maximo...

  • THE THURSDAY CORRESPONDENT
Some Fantastic Place On Friday 6th August 2010 JC wrote a piece on the Dundee band The View’s single Superstar Tradesman and included in the article was a track which was in my opinion the worst ever cover version I’ve ever heard…. Up the Junction taken from their Zane Lowe Radio One show session. Squeeze have been a favourite of mine for too many years to accept the minky Dundonians version as anything other than PISH!! On a recent episode of the Sky Arts Songwriters series Tilbrook and Difford told of how they met after the nineteen year ...

  • Mercury Music Prize 2011 – as it happened ..
PJ Harvey claims the Mercury prize for the second time, for her eighth album Let England Shake 5.04pm: It's Mercury prize time again! Those annual awards where the nation's music fans unite to say "It's a totally pointless industry ceremony dishing out an arbitrary prize" before banging on about what a disgrace it is that *insert triumphant band here* won it when it really should have gone to *insert less triumphant but more obscure band here*. And so on and so forth. There is, as always, a spot reserved on some wobbly stool on the balcony ...

  • View (Leeds Festival 2011)
Imagine the scene. The first afternoon of the festival and the colours on Main Stage were fast descending from glorious greens and blues to all shades of grey and brown. Then lead singer of The View, Kyle Falconer, slurred that it was not actually raining. Wonder what all the umbrellas...

  • A City Guide : Reading/Leeds Festival
In our second guest feature write-up for the week, devoted soley to to this weekends R&L; Festival, we asked some of the casting line-up to give us an insight about where they’re from as they journey to one of the best festivals in the world. Very, very insightful.   The Joy Formidable – Ritzy   I grew up on the outskirts of a tiny village called Rhosesmor in North Wales. In the locality we’re known as gorsehoppers. I think that might be derogatory, but i have no quibble with gorse bushes. It’s very rugged, the views over the Clwydian hills ...

  • My First Gig : Reading/Leeds Festival
In the build-up to perhaps the best festival in UK (depending on your earbuds) we’ll be focusing this weeks daily guest features accordingly.  We have a good mix of contributors including Welsh favourites Ritzy (from The Joy Formidable) and Gavin (from The Blackout) both equally fantastic, specializing in different audio bliss.   Today our musician write about their first gigs. Here’s what they had to say….   The Joy Formidable – Ritzy   Elvis Costello and The Attractions Liverpool Royal Court aged 6. The reason I got into music. I fell asleep before the encore but it had a profound effect on ...

  • Camp Bestival 2011 - Review
Imagine a world where 15,000 children and 15,000 adults come together besides a castle near the sea, where an Alice In Wonderland bar serves intoxicating liquids, a Women’s Institute tea tent serves delicious homemade cake, medieval jousting takes place just metres from a Bollywood inspired disco, whilst a bit further round the corner men dressed as medieval characters play crazy golf, bubbles float around in the air just waiting to be popped and Primal Scream belt out the whole of their Screamadelica set. Then as this strange dream world comes to an end there’s a firework ...

  • Esperi - The EP
Technology has long been a point of contention for musicians and listeners. While the ability for anyone with $500 to record an entire album in their room has led to some great music, the lackluster output of most hobbyists since R. Stevie Moore has over-saturated a market rife with promise. Scottish singer/songwriter/festival player Esperi (a name strikingly similar to British surreal artist and SubGenius par excellence Espira) has, according to his press release, received general praise from the UK media that has covered his material to date. Given a leaning towards soft, lush, and (dare I say it ...

  • Feature: Best Of The Rest: 2011
It’s been a vintage year for Australian music so far (check out our critics’ mid-year report if you’re not convinced), but there’s still plenty left in the tank for the remainder of 2011. The list below is likely to fluctuate and is by no means exhaustive, so feel free to add any omissions in the comments section below. (If we’re feeling generous we might even put them up.) In the interests of symmetry, we’ve decided to include the entire month of July. July What: Future Universe by Ron S. Peno and The Superstitions. When: July ...

  • T In The Park 2011 - Festival Diaries
On first impressions - as punters clad as stormtroopers and mario rush through the gates towards the T in The Park arena, I’m shocked yet refreshed by how unfashionable this whole festival feels. As the girl group Parade kicks things off in the King Tut’s Wah Wah Tent - seemingly attempting to prove that cameltoe really is the new cleavage - people dance shamelessly to old S Club 7 hits and trashy garage. It’s kind of like a copy of the X Factor Magazine that someone let get trampled in the mud and pissed on a little bit. Just with ...

  • T In The Park 2011 - Big Country/The View ..
T in the Park didn’t feel like T in the Park to begin with. First of all, no rain, no queues, I mean no queues. Straight in, ticket, wristband within half an hour. The only moan could have been to do with the amount I had packed for three days and trudging to the furthest campsite to join friends. TITP uniform this year was pink – lots of it –never seen so many pink wellies and kagouls. Plus fluorescent anything, especially face and body paint – to counteract the grey skies and circling scavenging seagulls. The fluorescent yellow army of security ...

  • The View Open T In The Park 2011
Dundonian indie scamps The View have opened the first day of T In The Park 2011. After the predictions of torrential rain, mud and even flooding it was a relatively sedate Balado site which greeted fans on arrival at T In The Park 2011. Dogged by rumours of poor weather, the sell out event got under way to a mild climate, albeit with a stubbornly overcast Perthshire sky. Unveiling a new lay out, T In The Park offered up a number of musical morsels for those lucky enough to grab a ticket. Glasgow based outfit Kassidy have won a lot ...

  • T In The Park 2011 - Weather Forecast
T In The Park could be set for a wash out after forecasters began predicting heavy rain for the weekend event. Scotland's biggest music festival, T In The Park draws more than 80,000 people to the Balado site. An enormous undertaking, this year's stellar attractions include Foo Fighters, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Pulp, Beyonce and more. However much will depend on the weather. Scotland is famed for its ability to throw up four seasons in one day, and previous instalments of T In The Park have owed their success to a dose of sunshine. So how will ...
