  • eingestreut (396): josienne clarke

  • Dream Concert: Primus
Primus has been my favorite band ever since my sixth grade self laid ears on Sailing The Seas Of Cheese .  Their quirky brand of bass guitar-led funk/thrash hybrid and Les's humorous lyrics had me hooked from then on.  Usually, I reserve my "Dream Concert" features for bucketlist bands that I have never seen but I have not seen Primus since I got the chance to see them at Bogart's in 1999.  So it has been a while.  Well, next week I will get another chance, as they are on tour supporting last year's excellent album Green ...

  • Fiend – “Champagne” F. Curren$y [Video]
“Champagne” landed on Fiend’s Cookin’ Soul mixtape, which was actually rather splendid. Assisted by Spitta, we not get some visuals of the two prowling the seas on their yacht with some cronies, having an absolutely splendid time. Today, of course,…

  • Live: Bass in the Place. Primus, Royal Alber ..
The conjoining of the genres 'funk' and 'metal', in this era of pedantic compartmentalisation, is a highly dubious grey area probably best avoided even before Anthony Kiedis' fornication-fixated Californians put paid to any credibility within the depths of that already murky amalgam. Thus for fellow West Coasters Primus – perhaps most famed for the penning of the South Park theme toon – to attempt to affix the ears of the immature and underage to their ageing back catalogue is another pretty tricky one. That Les Claypool et al. thunder through twenty-odd tracks with youthful exuberance and humour to better the blunt obscenities ...

  • Primus - Live At The Royal Albert Hall, Lond ..
Billed rather formally as ‘An Evening With Primus’ this two-night residency at the poshest of venues is a rather strange move for these cult rock oddities. Then again, Les, Lar and Jay are strange people thus it makes perfect sense in a round about way. In the world of Primus the surreal is real and it’s time to bring Les Claypool’s demented world of fish, war and slap bass back to the capital after last years winning show in Brixton. Tonight promises to be a more fan centred affair with career highlight ‘Sailing The Seas Of Cheese’ and ...

  • Greece-born saxophonist Nikos Koulouris expa ..
Saxophonist Nikos Koulouris is carving a space in the progressive face of jazz. On the surface, Koulouris' new four-track EP "...Dare to Dream" may be sailing the seas of smooth jazz but artistically he isn't coasting on stylistic clichés here. Koulouris is actually redefining ...

  • A Look at the Music-Themed Cruise Fad...
New York Times : Everyone from oldies acts like Frankie Avalon to current artists like R. Kelly and Blake Shelton are taking to the seas. Did the fourth annual New Kids on the Block cruise really sell out in four hours? Of course it did! Can death-metal fans really enjoy Cannibal Corpse and 31 other doom merchants while sailing from Miami to the Grand Caymans? They don’t call it 70,000 Tons of Metal for nothing. Read and comment. • Film Review: Wrath of the Titans (Dir. Jonat ..
Wrath of the Titans Dir. Jonathan Liebesman [Warner Bros.; 2012] by Alex Peterson Rating: 3D was recently used to awe-inspiring effect in John Carter ( TMT Review ), a movie that both cost a lot more and will make a lot less than Wrath of the Titans . Carter proves that 3D isn’t always a bad idea. In the hands of a good director, it can be inextricably tethered to a good story by giving life, not just flair, to that story’s visuals. Wrath of the Titans director Jonathan Liebesman takes whatever good will John Carter engendered for 3D and runs ...

  • Surprise!: The Mariner’s Revenge Song
The Decemberists : The Mariner’s Revenge Song [ purchase ] I wrote previously about seeing Richard Thompson in England with my family. A few years later, we took our second, and to date, last, family European trip to Amsterdam. One of the highlights was seeing The Decemberists at the Paradiso, a legendary club that holds about 1500 people, standing, in a former church. The Stones, U2, Prince, The Police, Bowie and Pink Floyd have all played this relatively small, but wonderful, venue. The Decemberists were a band that we were just getting into. I love them because of the complexity of their ...
