  • NXNE Song Of The Day: Andre Williams & The S ..
My 12th grade English teacher once made the statement that modern music lacked vitality. In her words, when she turned on the radio in her time, “a revolution came out of the speakers” whereas she thought that contemporary music was frivolous and shallow. While I disagree with her (I defy anyone to listen to the likes of Andrew Bird or Foxes">Fleet Foxes and call them frivolous and shallow), I do think there’s much to be gained by collaboration between older … →

  • Bloggy Goodness: Deer Tick’s Newport Folk Be ..
We’ve been counting down the days until this year’s Newport Folk Festival , since the lineup was announced back in the beginning of March. With the fest essentially extending to three days this year, thanks in part to Wilco’s Friday night show, and music ending on the early side for music festival standards, it’s no surprise that there have been a handful of “late-night” options announced for those headed Newport. Much like they did last year, local heroes  Deer Tick  will again take up residency at the  Newport Blues Cafe , where they will curate three Newport Folk ...

  • Andre Williams & The Sadies: "Night & Day" ( ..
The cool thing to do over the last couple of years has been for indie rockers to team up with under-appreciated blues or soul artists to create something new.   Jack White did it.   Drive-By Truckers did it.  Now Toronto's own The Sadies are doing it with Andre Williams for the new album Night & Die . Initially, the pairing of Williams' blues with The Sadies' root rock would seem to be a bizarre match.  However, as you listen to the record, you come to realize that both styles of music have an innate sadness to them, which makes them a perfect ...

There's plenty of new music to be excited about this week...and we really mean that. Not Your Kind of People , the long awaited new release from Garbage , is out this week (pictured), and that's just for starters. Major label records dominate this week with new material from Owl City , Presley">Lisa Marie Presley , and Adam Lambert . But don't count out the indies! How can we not get excited about records from Violens , Lee Bains III and The Glory Fires , and Parlovr ? We also would like to mention Killer Mike , Reggie Watts , and Birthmark . Check out below ...

  • Eateries and Watering Holes: The Horseshoe ..
The Sadies : The Horseshoe [ purchase ] In 2006 Canadian filmmaker Ron Mann asked The Sadies to score his latest documentary about Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, a custom car builder and leader of the hot rod movement of the late 1950's/early 1960s. Tales of the Rat Fink was described by many critics as Mann's masterpiece. The film uses non-traditional documentary techniques such as animation and first person narration (Roth was voiced by John Goodman) to tell the story of Roth's car creations and hot rod life in Southern California. The Sadies scored the movie by bridging animation and ...

  • Shelf Life: Spillers Records
To many across the globe, Spillers Records in Cardiff is more than just a shop; it’s an institution. Boasting the title of the oldest record store in the world, it was founded in 1894 by Henry Spiller and is still going strong today (despite the odd tumultuous time!). ClashMusic caught up with owner Ashli Todd, to talk third chances, Manic Street Preacher dedications and dysfunctional school photos. Spillers is the oldest record store in the world. What has kept it going all these years? It's a hard one to pin down but at the core of it are ...

Over the weekend the Juno awards were held in Ottawa. The Junos are the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys. William Shatner hosted the TV event on Sunday (how awesome is that?). Feist beat Michael Buble for artist of the year, Dallas Green beat Feist for songwriter of the year, and Dan Mangan won best new artist, even though he's not that new (similar to Bon Iver winning that award at the Grammys). Good old Justin Beiber won the Teenaged Girls' Choice Award, I mean People's Choice Award. You can see all of the nominees and award winners here ...

  • The Gypsies Had No Homes, The Doors Had No B ..
Season 2, Episode 19 Originally aired April 30, 1991   I don't particularly care for The Doors , but I actually think that makes this bit from Kids In The Hall even funnier. Bruce McCullough is perfect as Insane Record Store Guy and he teaches Kevin McDonald two valuable lessons: 1) Greatest Hits albums are for housewives and little girls and 2) When you're free-flyin' with The Doors, maaan, what do you need a safety net for?!?! Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet - Having An Average Weekend Did you know this was the title of the Kids In The Hall ...
