Bloggy Goodness: Deer Tick’s Newport Folk Be ..We’ve been counting down the days until this year’s Newport Folk Festival , since the lineup was announced back in the beginning of March. With the fest essentially extending to three days this year, thanks in part to Wilco’s Friday night show, and music ending on the early side for music festival standards, it’s no surprise that there have been a handful of “late-night” options announced for those headed Newport. Andre Williams & The Sadies: "Night & Day" ( ..The cool thing to do over the last couple of years has been for indie rockers to team up with under-appreciated blues or soul artists to create something new. Jack White did it. Drive-By Truckers did it. Now Toronto's own The Sadies are doing it with Andre Williams for the new album Night & Die . Eateries and Watering Holes: The Horseshoe ..The Sadies : The Horseshoe [ purchase ] In 2006 Canadian filmmaker Ron Mann asked The Sadies to score his latest documentary about Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, a custom car builder and leader of the hot rod movement of the late 1950's/early 1960s. Tales of the Rat Fink was described by many critics as Mann's masterpiece. The film uses non-traditional documentary techniques such as animation and first person narration (Roth was voiced by John Goodman) to tell the story of Roth's car creations and hot rod life in Southern California. RumbleseatOver the weekend the Juno awards were held in Ottawa. The Junos are the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys. William Shatner hosted the TV event on Sunday (how awesome is that?). Feist beat Michael Buble for artist of the year, Dallas Green beat Feist for songwriter of the year, and Dan Mangan won best new artist, even though he's not that new (similar to Bon Iver winning that award at the Grammys).
