  • Be Smart, See Dum Dum Girls Tonight
Singer-songwriter Kristen Gundred’s varied musical tastes (think: the Ronettes and the Ramones) became obvious when she took the stage name Dee-Dee and founded the band Dum Dum Girls. The quartet—Dee-Dee (vocals and guitar), Jules (guitar and vocals), Sandy (drums and vocals) and Malia James (bass and vocals)—really arrived on the scene when the debut LP [...]

Returning this year are familiar faces armed with a new collection of songs. Looking ahead, here are a selection of those to be most excited about. MAJOR LAZER “Now that people know what Major Lazer is we can skip a lot of the ground work,” beams the globe-trotting chameleonic don of dance Diplo, who makes up one-half of neo-dancehall outfit Major Lazer alongside fidget-house producer Switch. The dynamic duo dropped debut ‘Guns Don’t Kill People - Lazers Do’ in mid-2009, a storming collaborative frenzy that fused authentic Jamaican riddims with modern bass-heavy hip-hop. Its successor, the Philadelphian explains, is set ...

conciliate \kuhn-SIL-ee-eyt\, verb: 1. To overcome the distrust or hostility of; placate; win over. 2. To win or gain (goodwill, regard, or favor). 3. To make compatible; reconcile. 4. To become agreeable or reconciled. Conciliate comes from the Latin word conciliāre meaning "to bring together." It is related to the words council and calendar. Petri Douche A place/location where a lot of douchebags are known to congregate. A place that attracts and seemingly breeds chavs/douchebags/jackwagons/etc etc. Oh hell no I'm not going to Wetherspoons, that place is a petri douche! Or: urgh why would you ...

  • Maya Laner – Why Don’t They Let Us Fall in L ..
This such a happy way to start the weekend. Everyone should be thankful that more artists don’t send in covers of 60′s Motown (especially of the girl groups) because I think I might just only post them. Here, Maya Laner of Local Hero covers the 1963 classic by The Ronettes. The 18 year old recorded [...]

  • One to Watch – Jagwar Ma
Posted in General Clickable Music Videos Soundbite One of the best tunes I’ve heard this year! Well, as 2012 is less than 2 weeks old that’s not saying much, but this tune ‘Come Save Me‘ by former Lost Valentino, Ma">Jagwar Ma is pleasing me no end. It’s starts with a  Phil Spector-ish wall of sound drumbeat reminiscent of The Ronettes, Be my [...]

Maya Laner of Local Hero (we featured their single “ Lady Wisconsin ” back in December) recently recorded the sweetest little cover song we ever did hear. Her rendition of The Ronettes’ 1963 classic “”Why Don’t They Let Us Fall In Love” is delicate, and weaves ukelele, vocal overlays, acoustic guitar, and an accordion. Oh, and she blended the instrumentals herself! Not bad for an 18 year old ...

  • Red Bird Era
LP on the Charly label from the 80's. Great compilation of songs from the 60's on the Red Bird label set up by Leiber & Stoller in New York including such artists as the Dixie Cups, Alvin Robinson, The ad-Libs and The Robbins who came from New Orleans. Wikipedia says of the Dixie Cups - "The group hit the top of the charts in 1964 with "Chapel of Love," a song that Phil Spector, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich had originally written for The Ronettes. The trio consisted of sisters Barbara Ann and Rosa Lee Hawkins; plus their cousin Joan Marie Johnson, from the Calliope housing project in New Orleans. They first sang together in grade school. Originally they were to be called Little Miss and the Muffets, but were named The Dixie Cups just prior to their first release. By 1963 the trio had decided to pursue a career in music and began singing locally as the Meltones. Within a year Joe Jones, a successful singer in his own ...

Hey Ho, here we go!  We've got Part 2 (of 5) of The Big Rock Candy Mountain Favorite Records of 2011!    Aren't y'all a'quiver with excitement!  Of course you are! Quick caveat:  We have a huge stack of records from the past year that we haven't gotten to yet.  And we're not including 7"'s in this list.   What that means, of course, is that we're missing out on a whole bunch of great shit!  Such, of course, is the nature of lists.  Are we missing a killer record?  Yep!  Hopefully we'll ...

  • Cults - S/T
I love music duos. Whether it’s rock, electronic or whatever I love when two awesome musicians come together and create wonderful music. Ever since The White Stripes were fading away in the mid millennium, it seems like I was going to have a void with music duos. Luckily, awesome artists like Justice, She & Him, Ting Tings">The Ting Tings, The Kills, MGMT, The XX, The Black Keys, Matt and Kim , and the Cults emerged. Depending on if you wanted a louder hard rock sound ( The Black Keys ), electronic ( Justice ), indie electronic ( MGMT ), indie pop ( She & Him, Ting Tings, The ...

  • The Atheist Who Stole Christmas
by Nicole Audrey Spector How a guy who once pulled over the car upon espying a black glitter rosary on my neck (I was 12 and the rosary was from Claire's Accessories) was ever impelled to give the world a self-declared “Christmas Gift” is ironic. Yet my dad, in making A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector was hardly a grinch won over. I don't exaggerate when I say that he'd rather have a tick burrowed in his ear than a sentimental Christian on his back. Or a sentimental Jew for that matter (though one may ...

  • Dum Dum Girls - Bedroom Eyes
• Music Review: Co La - Daydream Repeater
Co La Daydream Repeater [NNA Tapes; 2011] by Rowan Savage Rating: “We cannot retrace our steps, going forward may be the same as going backwards. We cannot retrace our steps, retrace our steps.” —Gertrude Stein You remember that naughtily delighted moment when, as a kid, you found out that Coca-Cola was so monikered because it originally contained cocaine? Co La — Ecstatic Sunshine’s Matt Papich — isn’t much like that, though the looping, self-centered conversation characteristic of coke is definitely a metaphorical point of reference. That is to say, his tracks are constructed from brief loops of other works, often ...

dum dum girls - bedroom girls [oh how wonderful is this? harping back to a bygone era of cool girl band a la the go-go's or early bangles (i'm sure the dum dum girls would rather be compared to the ronettes or blondie), this is just a catchy slice of retro indie pop to make your week start perfectly!] http://feeds.feedburner.com/WongiesMusicWorld
