  • Shriekback - My Spine is the Bassline
I remember 1982 as being a pretty horrible era for music. Everywhere you went it was dreary synth pop and over-privileged new romantics. I was keeping my head down at the time, building oscillators and playing around with homemade electronic music. So it was that I failed to notice the emergence of Shriekback to join the new wave of funk bands such as A Certain Ratio and 23 Skidoo. They would go on to be more commercially successful than either, but I'm still partial to their earlier, more primitive recordings. Here's an early single, My Spine is the ...

  • British Hustle
Two posts in one today, to make up for a week long absence of illegally distributed music via our ragged looking blogspot page, both with circa 1983 London theme, one from me and another from Tom Thump, perhaps the first rare groove DJ I ever heard after first moving to San Francisco a long time ago. I made contact with him whilst searching for a mixtape of his that I used to play on repeat during my train ride into work around the turn of the millennium, he graciously dug into his archive and hooked me up, as well as ...

Vincent">St. Vincent’s seemingly endless tour wound back through Chicago this past Friday, expanding from the smaller Metro to the hallowed halls of the Vic Theatre. Annie Clark presented a tightly packed set to the sold-out crowd, playing what have now become standards off of her first two albums, 2007′s Marry Me , and 2009′s Actor , though she still relied heavily on her most recent masterpiece, 2011′s Strange Mercy . Opening with the ...

  • Coachella 2012: Radiohead Gets Communal; Buz ..
Filed under: News Jason Persse for AOL Day two, week two, of the flame-broiled Coachella festival brought the highest temperatures yet, but this time the crowds were ready. Shirts? Who needs 'em? From the neo-tribal drum-circle vibe during tUnE-yArDs ' set to the frothing mosh pit that opened up for English punk godfathers Buzzcocks , there was something a little ... primal in the air. After whipping the kids into a frenzy with their closer, "Orgasm Addict," even the normally stoic Buzzcocks had their blood up, yelling, "Keep rock 'n' roll alive, turn off f---ing MTV!" Vincent">St. Vincent strutted onto the stage ...

  • St. Vincent - Krokodil
(4AD, 2012) First -- stop reading and go to your record store and buy this 7", right now. It's a Record Store Day special release and there might still be one on the shelf for you. ( At the time of writing, Rhino Records in Claremont has approximately three copies left. ) You won't regret it. Now -- okay. It's time to talk about Vincent">St. Vincent. Krokodil kicks ass. It's the first official signal of a direction she's been hinting at over the last few years: loud, dark, heavy, ugly. It rules. Actor , of course, was darker than ...

  • FUCK Q (or why I stopped buying music magazi ..
It was at Gatwick Airport some 14 months ago when catching the connecting flight to Glasgow have arrived overnight from Florida. I was tired and jet-lagged and a bit grumpy. I noticed that a new edition of Q was out on the shelf, and I picked it up to have a look at what they had listed as their '50 Ultimate British Songs'. But before I got to that, I noticed from the index that there was also an in-depth feature on Edwyn Collins , so this was the first thing I turned to. I had a quick glance over it ...

  • Mark Stewart - Live At The Scala, London
Mark Stewart is big. Literally. In size, scale and persona the man is HUGE. When his prop forward bulk looms through the stage door, he seems to trundle with him enormous baggage – this is, after all, the man who propelled The Pop Group through entire genres, leaving new possibilities, new disciplines in their wake. Recent album ‘The Politics Of Envy’ struggled with the legend. Fusing distorted beats with punk rock guitars and political ire, Mark Stewart produced something every bit as contrarian as his post-punk heyday. A difficult listen, the album seems to come to vivid life when confronted with ...

IT’S TIME. We could not possibly be more excited about the latest members of our eMusic Selects Family: The Yellow Dogs. Their music is fierce and furious — pairing the herky-jerk tempos of Gang of Four with the sneering vocal delivery of PiL and The Pop Group. We’re so confident you’ll love it, too, that [...]

  • Mark Stewart - The Politics of Envy
by Ben Donnelly The first wave of post-punk experimenters have been resilient, showing little of the complacency that settles in with other long-running performers. In the last 10 years, early oddities like The Pop Group's Y have been re-assessed as classics. The Bristol brats' band name was facetious at the... Read More
