What's that, Radio One? Your big weekend in going to be in East London this summer ? Yes, that's a brilliant idea. It's not like every bloody thing else is happening in East London this summer, is it? I'm still at a loss as to how it makes everyone feel like the Olympics is a nation event when it's acting like a giant magnet that just sucks everything, inexorably, back into the capital. Anyway, line-up: Plan B. Jessie J. Andy C. And some people with full surnames. -- Visit No Rock & Roll Fun to comment, complain and ...

I can’t wait for the Olympics. It’ll be impossible to traverse London for a month. Protest is going to be banned. There will be 13,500 troops on the streets. Really, it’s going to be just great. Of course, there are positive elements to this absurd circus. It is at least partially about humans doing extraordinary [...]

  • Gordon in the morning: Jagger swagger
Not often the scribbling of Tom Newton Dunn, The Sun's political editor, makes it onto Gordon's pages, but his story today that Mick Jagger is going to help Cameron promote Britain . Of course, this is at an event overseas; Jagger and The Rolling Stones being famously averse to spending too long in Britain lest they actually pay their fair share of tax. It's at Davos, which will give Mick a chance to visit his money at the same time. This, apparently, is a "publicity coup": The Rolling Stones legend will be star attraction at an event in ...

  • Elbow Into The Olympics
English rock band Elbow (pictured) have written a song for this year’s London Olympics. Bass player Pete Turner has said that the Philharmonic Orchestra and London Orchestral Choir both appear on the song. They’re not the only British musicians who’ve been tapped for the event, with Underworld composing music for the opening ceremony, which will be directed by filmmaker Danny Boyle .

  • Elbow Discuss Olympics Theme
Elbow have discussed the new song they have composed as a theme for the Olympics. Still almost six months away, the Olympics are already making an impact on the music schedule. The Big Chill decided to postpone this summer's instalment recently, with organisers citing the sporting ceremony as a factor. But for all its disruption, the Olympics could have a positive contribution to the British music scene. Case in point? New material from Elbow. The band were commissioned to supply the theme song for the BBC's coverage of the event, and have responded with 'First Steps'. Bass player ...

  • Standards: Good Lovin'
Monkeys Typing : Good Lovin' [Not available for purchase, but see below for more downloads] 1965 was the year I began listening to pop music. It's also the year Good Lovin' was written and released, though I can't claim to having heard either the Limmie Snell or The Olympics versions. I was, however, very much tuning in to AM radio when the more popularly known Young Rascals version hit the charts in 1966. The song is ranked number 325 in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and as such, has been a standard for more than ...

  • Big Chill: Olympics ruins it for music fans ..
The Olympics - apparently some sort of superannuated sports day - was already a major part of the decision for Glastonbury to take a year off; Now it's claimed the Big Chill as well : The Big Chill festival's Melvin Benn, Managing Director Festival Republic, said he considered changing the date of the festival but admitted he also faced problems of artist availability: “It is with a considerable amount of regret that I have decided not to go ahead with The Big Chill in 2012. “I looked long and hard late last year at moving the date so it didn’t ...

  • The Big Chill Festival fall at first hurdle ..
The Big Chill Festival has been cancelled this year, with the Olympics cited as the main reason. Festival organiser Melvin Benn released the following statement earlier today: “I looked long and hard late last year at moving the date so it didn’t clash with the Olympics but the mix of the festival fans desire to keep the date and an inability to find an alternative date that works, I plumped for maintaining the existing weekend. Sadly, the artist availability and confirmations we were achieving led me to conclude that I couldn’t risk going ahead with the event as ...

  • The Apple Cart Returns
The Apple Cart is set to return this summer with an eclectic mixture of music, comedy and art. Brought to you by the same team who birthed Field Day and Underage, The Apple Cart is one of London's more unusual one day events. Perfect for families, last summer's instalment merged new music with art and spoken word. Returning for a fresh instalment in Victoria Park, this summer's event will arrive slightly earlier to avoid clashing with the Olympics. Taking place on June 3rd, the first names on the bill for The Apple Cart have been announced. Noah ...

  • The Big Chill 2012 Postponed
The organisers of The Big Chill have confirmed that this summer's instalment has been postponed. Held at the steps of Eastnor Castle, The Big Chill has earned a reputation as one of the summer's more unique events. Growing in size and stature, the festival mixes a family friendly atmosphere with an eclectic music taste. Sadly, though, The Big Chill will not be happening this summer. A short announcement from organiser Melvin Benn this morning (January 19th) confirmed the news: It is with a considerable amount of regret that I have decided not to go ahead with The Big ...

  • Stream: Mammal Club - Towards You With Lust ..
Words: Saam Das We first talked about Northerners Mammal Club in October 2010 , followed by our excitement over their 'Au' EP last April. 'Otter' still stands out as one of my favourite tracks of 2011. Anyway, they've returned with a wonderfully ethereal slice of experimental pop, which you can listen to below. 'Toward You With Lust' is actually a track that's been floating along for well over a year now, with the YouTube performance video below, filmed way back in September 2010. A new hypnotic, nostalgic-sports-day-themed video has been put together - perhaps with the Olympics arriving on our ...

IN THE NEWS It's 50 YEARS OF JAMAICAN INDEPENDENCE this year and there's sure to be lots going on, trust me.
