The Mountain Goats

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

The Mountain Goats is a Durham, North Carolina -based band, led by American singer-songwriter John Darnielle. Darnielle began recording in 1991, and is known for his highly literate lyrics and (until 2002) his lo-fi recording style. The Mountain Goats' recent members have comprised t... Read More

  • Advance Base - A Shut-In's Prayer
On first listen, Advance Base seems little more than a New Game+ of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Owen Ashworth's previous pseudonym. Ashworth hung up the Casiotone mantel with 2009's Vs Children , closing the door on a decade of delicate songwriting backed by lo-fi, sometimes quite harsh out-of-the-box keyboard sounds and programmed drums. After a couple of wilderness years, Ashworth timidly invites himself back into the fold with A Shut-In's Prayer , a collection of delicately-written songs backed by programmed drums... But wait! This is where it gets interesting. With Advance Base, the simple drum machine beats are ...

  • The Mountain Goats @ The Corner Hotel 10/05/ ..
With songs about dysfunctional relationships, child abuse and a decent sprinkling of biblical references, it would be easy to assume Mountain Goats shows would be a sombre affair. Instead Thursday night’s show at The Corner felt like a massive party dedicated to shouting lyrics back at the stage, great banter and swooning during each song.

  • The Mountain Goats / Catherine Traicos
The Zoo – Fri May 4 “It would be funny watching the hipsters sing ‘Hail Satan!’ if they play The Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton”, my friend muses before tonight’s show. Indeed, the crowd is one of the more diverse ones I’ve seen at The Zoo over the years, with a lot less check shirts than usual. First, Sydney singer-songwriter Catherine Traicos plays a nicely low-ley opening set, but everyone’s ultimately here to listen to North Carolina’s favourite son spin his wisdom.  ...

  • Bob Mould London Date, Re-Issues Planned
Bob Mould is set to play a one off London show this summer, running alongside four re-issues. Any discussion of American rock music in the 90s which doesn't include Bob Mould is invalid from the outset. A mainstay with Husker Du, the songwriter defined college rock before going on to lead Sugar. Now working under his own name, Bob Mould remains a fascinating contrary figure. Recently re-visiting Sugar's 1992 album 'Copper Blue' the American artist has now confirmed plans for a one off London show. Part of a short burst of European dates, Bob Mould is set to ...

  • The Mountain Goats @ Metro Theatre
A little over five years ago I saw my first Mountain Goats show. It was, to be honest, a blindingly great show. Full of spirit and heart and utter excitement. It was also, in a convoluted way, the beginnings of how I met the girl. Fast forward to last night and the earnest troubadours returned to the same venue of 2007. With the girl in hand, now my wife, we ventured out ready for another goat tastic experience. In between these two shows the band had toured Australia twice, they are very busy, with two shows at the Manning Bar ...

May 27th, 2001: The Mountain Goats - "Eugene Sue" by Nathan Shaffer on 04-30-2012 In March of 2011, John Darnielle auctioned a tape on ebay dated “5/27/01” and labeled “FRENETIQUES Demos.” One song, “Eugene Sue,” was recorded on the tape. (John Darnielle writes that “it is the only Mountain Goats song known to feature a whistling outro.”) The auction was held for the benefit of Doctors Without Borders in the wake of the earthquake in Japan; it sold for $3,500.00. One performance, one recording, one tape, one song, one sale. For nearly a year, the song existed ...

  • Umphrey’s McGee Welcomes Buddy Guy to Chicag ..
Yesterday was a day of ups and downs for HT faves Umphrey’s McGee as the group took a beating on the internet for their new Chicago theme song and then went on perform with legendary blues man Buddy Guy at a private show in Chicago for Choose Chicago volunteers. For the group’s performance at Park West, the band debuted their theme song for The Windy City titled “Chicago.” The tune went viral on Thursday and not in a good way. An A.V. Club Chicago article lambasted the cheesy song, which also features contributions from Buddy Guy and ...

Always found this song so funny. The melody is much too triumphant for the lyrics. Me and my friends used to sing this in front of strangers for kicks. Pretty good time.
