If you've ever had a love one battle cancer (and I have) you know it's a very draining experience, emotionally, physically and financially. Two-year-old Oliver Gant, son of New Raleigh co-founder Jed Gant, is battling a very rare cancer, and proceeds from this benefit will help the Gants, and benefit organizations that fight cancer. I can’t speak for everyone in attendance, but the preponderance of dirge and post-apocalyptic skree made me feel rather somber. This week's cool shows: Weedeater, Cough and ..With Labor Day coming up, and Hopscotch happening next week, this weekend is somewhat light on shows. But the shows that are happening are definitely worth your time. On Thursday, Sept. 1, Cough, MAKE and Swordasters of Ginaz will be at Casbah. I don't know anything about the Swordmasters, but Cough and MAKE have consistently been two of my favorite doomy bands over the past year.
