  • The Year Of Rebel Birds - Ack Ack Ack!
There once was a dude called Oli, who decided that living a normal, safe life wasn't for him. So he gave everything up - during the global financial crisis - and started an independent record store. Good move... Actually, it's worked out pretty well. Ack! Ack! Ack! Records in Middlesborough is a helluva solid store, with a beautifully selective yet diverse range of gear. If you're in that neck of the woods, definitely go there and blow your dough! But he didn't want to stop there, having started his own label. Ack!Ack!Ack!'s first release is ...

  • The Intelligence Finally Found in the Back o ..
It’s no secret around here that the Intelligence are one of my favorite bands, period. I’ve been looking forward to their upcoming album Everybody’s Got It Easy But Me all year. The Intelligence use to be based in Seattle and they would play every few months and I could easily get my fix. Well, things [...]

On June 19, San Francisco garage-rock troublestarters the Intelligence follow up 2010's solid Males with a new LP, Everybody's Got It Easy But Me , via In the Red . "(They Found Me in the Back of) the Galaxy" appears not only on that record, but also on a forthcoming split 7" with fellow Bay Area jangler Kelley Stoltz . • The Daily Choice: The Wimps - Stop Having Fu ..
Perhaps the scrappiest band I’ve heard out of Seattle in ages, The Wimps sounds something like The Intelligence strung out in a Hotel 6 on a lonely stretch of Aurora. The track sounds, strangely, skinny to me, stripped of all the bluff and bluster that so often buffets the music pushed upon us, leaving only [...]

Our irregular round-up of some new-ish cassette, CD-R and vinyl releases featuring Ghastly Spats, The Galaxy Folk, Bad//Dreems, Mad Nanna and the best punk band Australia has produced in ages, Helta Skelta. Words by TIM SCOTT . Ghastly Spats We're Breaking Through the Hymen (EP, Heinous Anus Records) Two dudes and two gals who break out smeared mascara and chipped black nail polish rock. It all sounds kind of feral. The music that a Hollywood production company would use for the soundtrack of an apocalyptic film shot in Marrickville. 'Sordid' has a pulsating and droney vocal chant/mumble while ...

  • Everything You Need to Know About "CISPA" ..
Quote: It took a debate that stretched to nearly seven hours, and votes on over a dozen amendments, but the U.S. House of Representatives finally approved the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act on April 26. Passions flared on both sides before the final vote on CISPA, which cleared the House by a comfortable margin of 248 to 168. CISPA would "waive every single privacy law ever enacted in the name of cybersecurity," Rep. Jared Polis, a Colorado Democrat and onetime Web entrepreneur, said during the debate. "Allowing the military and NSA to spy on Americans on American soil ...

  • To Eric Holder: Stop Lying About The PATRIOT ..
Senators Ron Wyden and Mark Udall have been blowing the whistle: Law enforcement is using a secret interpretation of the PATRIOT Act to spy on people who aren't connected with terrorism. The FBI operates under a cloak of secrecy, so we only know about this because these two courageous senators are defying the intelligence agencies and speaking out. Here's the New York Times: Mr. Wyden and Mr. Udall have for months been raising concerns that the government has secretly interpreted a part of the Patriot Act in a way that they portray as twisted, allowing the Federal Bureau ...

  • Listen: THEESatisfaction - 'awE naturalE' [F ..
Listen below to the fantastic debut by THEESatisfaction . Despite breaking onto the scene some three years ago and following a number of mixtapes, this is the Seattle pairs first full length effort. awE naturalE brings back a touch of class that’s been missing from the mainstream for a while now, with the intelligence of rappers like Talib Kweli and Mos Def, Stasia Irons and Catherine Harris-White easily fill the Outkast shaped void left in the rap game, listen for yourselves but we love this album.

  • Skypilot Rock with “Anonymous”
Skypilot have impressed me again with their second single “Anonymous,” the follow-up to “Harold (You Sold Your Brother Down).” It’s another anthemic slice of rock from the Brisbane band, but there’s more to it than simply a great sound. I love the intelligence of Skypilot’s approach to music making, the lyrics that talk about really [...]

  • Gogglebox: Watch The Rapture - 'In The Grace ..
The Rapture are one of those bands aren't they? You always forget how awesome they are until someone or something offers a reminder, at which point you go home, put on 'Echoes' and bask in its dance punk glory. Whilst you can't really do that with 'In The Grace Of Your Love' (well, not the dance punk anyway) the record and subseqeunt single still allow for a certain amount of the aforementioned basking. This time it's in the intelligence of the music, consistently building to memorable euphoria that you can't quite get in the same way ...

On February 14, Mexican Summer will put out a 7" from Los Angeles scuzzy punks Zig Zags , Scavenger . The title track will be backed by one other song, "Wastin My Time". Fun fact: Zig Zags have, at one time or another, shared members with fellow West Coast bashers the Intelligence and Unnatural Helpers .

  • Review: Katherine Heigl's 'One For The Money ..
"One for the Money" brings Janet Evanovich’s beloved heroine Stephanie Plum to life on screen, a ditzy would-be bounty hunter who succeeds only in endangering the lives of anyone near her and dismissing the intelligence of audiences. Adapted from the 1994 novel of the same name, the story finds the down-on-her-luck Stephanie (Katherine Heigl) in desperate need of money. Out of options, she turns to her sleazeball cousin Vinnie (Patrick Fischler), who runs a bail bond business unoriginally named Vincent Plum’s Bail Bonds. He reluctantly sets her up as a bail recovery agent, figuring she’ll soon tire ...
