  • I Missed Seeing Bob Marley Live Because Of T ..
Stories like these make my blood boil. Sabotage Times : In my role as the Zelig of the British music industry from 1975 until 1995 I met all kinds of superstars. David Bowie backstage at the Nashville to watch the original Human League – check. The Clash too many times to mention (not to mention being Mick Jones’ personal banker) – check. Ironing Kevin Rowland’s trousers as we stole and held to ransom the master tapes for Searching For The Young Soul Rebels – check. Stories? I got a million of ‘em. Regrets? Very few. I do have one though. In my days ...

  • Happy Birthday, Giorgio Moroder!
My hero! Dangerous Minds : The Italian music maestro Giorgio Moroder turns 72 today. In a career that spans well over forty years, Moroder has a strong claim to being one of the most influential producers ever. His ground-breaking work with Donna Summer brought electronic music to the masses with the smash “I Feel Love” in 1977, while the duo’s earlier collaboration on “Love To Love You Baby” set in stone the template for the extended, orgasmic disco mix. Then there are his seminal pop productions for the likes of Blondie, David Bowie, Sparks and the Human League’s Phil ...

  • Zebra And Snake - Healing Music
Finland’s Zebra And Snake come bearing synths. ‘Healing Music’ sounds a bit like Interpol covering The Human League and is as interesting - and uneven - as you might expect from that. The big tunes here - ‘Now And Forever’, ‘Empty Love Song’ and ‘Burden’ are brilliant, but there are moments where singer Tapio veers into histrionics. But mostly this is a strong opening volley, all glittering synths, post-punk grit and a gentle optimism. ‘Healing Music’ closes the album with a throbbing disco pulse. More like this please! 7/10 Words by Will Salmon

  • Roll Out Von Barrel
The KVB From: Southampton, United Kingdom If you believe the hysterical doom mongers the end of the world is nigh (again) and not even Indiana Jones can save us this time. Apparently an ancient Mayan chain of stationers forgot to order their 2013 calendar and therefore, obviously, a cataclysmic event will destroy the earth before the end of this year. With the world teetering on the edge of extinction it's hardly surprising that Glum Rock is undergoing a long overdue renaissance. Following the lead of The Horrors, bands like Toy, S.C.U.M and the under appreciated Suicide ...

Per the band, they’ve [...]

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia: It’ll always come back to The Human League, that’s a promise. World of Twist was formed in Sheffield in 1985 by guitarist Gordon King and singer Jamie Fry, the brother of Martin Fry of ABC. They relocated to Manchester and rode on the explosion of new bands in the area on the baggy wave. The 1989 version of World Of Twist featured Tony Ogden (vocalist and co-songwriter), Gordon King (guitar and co-songwriter), and Andrew Hobson (synthesisers), Alan Frost (visual effects, synthesisers), featuring the statuesque Julia McShells aka MC Shells (swirls and sea noises) and Angela Reilly (visual effects). Nick Sanderson (drums) joined some time later. The music press revealed that some ...

  • SATURDAY'S SCOTTISH SINGLE (Part 26)
Two of the trio were from Glasgow....that makes them a Scottish act as far as I'm concerned. From wiki:- Bronski Beat formed in 1983 when Somerville, Steinbachek and Bronski shared a three-bedroom flat in Lancaster House in Brixton, southwest London. Bronski Beat signed a recording contract with London Records in 1984 after doing only nine live gigs. The band's debut single, "Smalltown Boy", the tale of a boy who was cast away by his family for being homosexual, was a hit, peaking at #3 in the UK Singles Chart. The single was accompanied by a promotional video ...

  • Urine Working On Lollipop Chainsaw
Possibly the most nonsensical headline we’ve ever written, but it’s true. Jimmy Urine (pictured), frontman of Mindless Self Indulgence and The Left Rights, is teaming up with Japanese composer Akira Yamaoka (the man behind the Silent Hill soundtracks) to create the score for a video game about a cheerleader who kills zombies, which is called Lollipop Chainsaw. As well as their original score, the game will feature songs by Sleigh Bells, Toni Basil, MSTRKRFT, Dragonforce, The Human League, Joan J ...
