  • Album Review: Triple J - Triple J's Hottest ..
Triple J’s Hottest 100 is one of the most anticipated countdowns of each year. It tends to have something for everyone – representing the year in music. 2011’s Hottest 100 was, of course, no exception and features a variety of songs from a vast range of genres and artists/bands. The annual two disc CD release, Triple J’s Hottest 100 Vol. 19 is a 41 track compilation, featuring a selection of the songs that made the top 100 – and a stellar compilation at that. The variety of songs on these two discs is really commendable – you get a ...

  • Review: Keep On Dancin’s - The End Of Everyt ..
The vinyl reissue of the Keep On Dancin’s 2011 debut LP is likely to kickstart a long, slavish love affair with the Brisbane quartet, writes MATT SHEA . For all the vibrancy and colour inherent in the Brisbane music scene, all the angles and attitude and spirit, it’s hard to remember the last time a truly great album emerged from this city. There have been a slew of strong long players from local bands over the last couple of years – Ball Park Music, Velociraptor, The Grates, An Horse, and Kitchen’s Floor all come to mind – but never something ...

  • News: Dylan Tribute Shows Announced
The “Bob Dylan tribute” buried in last week’s Splendour In The Grass announcement certainly provoked a strong reaction from the M+N community. “OH MY GOD,” exclaimed forum user mrmagoo, while another claimed it made them “puke” (with excitement, we presume). Now, we can finally reveal that it’ll be more than just a one-off show. In the vein of The Beatles’ White Album concert and the aborted Nirvana tribute shows , the Bob Dylan 50th anniversary concert will be making its way to a theatre near you (if you live in Brisbane, Melbourne, or Sydney that is). In celebration ...

  • Bits ‘N’ Pieces
On Friday last week, Azealia Banks tweeted the following: “Australia in July!” That is all. Draw your own conclusions. If The Black Keys don’t make it to Australia in October, will they join the Big Day Out line-up in 2013? Chris Brown’s people have rejected reports he will join Rihanna at Supafest. There was a furore last week when The Grates tweeted that Kiwi fans had tipped them off that the new ad for Weetbix in New Zealand sounded like their song Aw Yeah, saying, “They asked us if they ...

  • Kiwi TV ad really grates
A New Zealand TV ad for breakfast cereal has got Brisbane duo The Grates in a tizz... Fans of the band pointed out that the tune used on the ad bore a striking resemblance to The Grates' 2008 ditty 'Aw Yeah', and the band agreed, tweeting “They asked us if they could record a version of this song for the ad. We said no. Can’t believe they did it anyway, jerks." Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ will win APRA’s “Song of the Year”, but let’s not forget the 29 other also-rans vying for the title. They include Hillsong Live, the “global expression of praise and worship from Hillsong Church”; inexplicably popular, one-dimensional joke band The Beards (pictured); ex- Idol contestants Guy Sebastian and Matt Corby; and Australian Music Prize winners The Jezabels.
