  • Library of Congress to Induct 25 Sounds Into ..
The Library of Congress has selected 25 “sounds” that have shaped American culture to be catalogued. While the sounds do include classic moments from popular music such as the late Donna Summer’s 1977 song “I Feel Love” and a recording of The Grateful Dead’s 1977 concert at Barton Hall, the collection also features the only known audio of American slaves who were interviewed in the 1930s. Also featured is sound from a talking doll created by Thomas Edison in 1888 that is believed to be the earliest commercial sound recording....

  • Library of Congress rips 25 new entries to t ..
Now that Facebook is a publicly traded company and wealth and prosperity have officially returned to every corner of the U.S.A., the government can get back to more important things, like putting together a killer mix tape for tomorrow’s Thirsty Thursday flippy cup party in the Library of Congress basement. Or, to put it a completely different way, the Library of Congress announced the addition of 25 new “cultural, artistic and/or historical treasures” to its National Recording Registry of, y’know, “cultural, artistic and/or historical treasures.” See, under the terms of something called the “National ...

  • Track Of The Day 24/5 - The See See
Somewhere along the line, Futurism becomes tradition. Take the 60s: the space age acted as the launching pad for countless experimental groups, exploding definitions of what could be achieved with guitar, drums and electricity. Now, though, most mop-top clad groups strumming their way through 60s style measures are immediately dismissed as staid, trad... retro . The See See , however, are slightly more difficult to shake off. Creative lynchpin Richard Olsen once led Acid Folk band The Eighteenth Day of May, giving him an added pedigree of life at the coal face of the avant garde. Deciding to focus on the pop ...

  • Phil Lesh Telstar Night at Terrapin Crossroa ..
When Grateful Dead/Furthur bassist Phil Lesh first revealed his plan to build a Bay Area venue, one of the more unorthodox events Lesh mentioned the club would host were dubbed “Telstar.” Lesh explained that on these nights he would put together a band for an evening of free-form improvisation. Now that Terrapin Crossroads has been open for a few months, the time has come for the first Telstar event.  Phil will team up with Furthur band mates John Kadlecik (guitar) and Jeff Chimenti (keys) as well as drummer Jaz Sawyer and multi-instrumentalist Jon Graboff of The Cardinals for the ...

  • The Plant Kingdom: Sugar Magnolia
Grateful Dead: Sugar Magnolia [ purchase Europe '72 version ] I grew up in a house with 2 magnolia trees in the yard. One was a venerable tree with a diameter (not circumference) close to 3 feet and a height nearing 50 feet – beautiful, huge white flowers. The other was a third-the-size, pink-flowered tree, and we knew it as a “Japanese” magnolia. Among other specimens of the plantae phylum in that same garden were numerous fig, plum, chestnut, walnut, linden, bay and pine trees (it was a large property in a rather exotic location) However- more to the point I intended to ...
