  • X-Ray Eyeballs Look Squalid And Oh So Splend ..
XRay Eyeballs are ready to foul up your living room and put out cigarettes on your cheeks once more. These blacker-than-thou noir-pop-punks have rejigged the lineup and are readying to tear down the foundations with Splendor Squalor , which 'X' is gleaned from. There is something decidedly glorious about this track, with enough glam, New Wave and Blondie references to poke a stick at before it's scuffed up with a Germs-monogrammed safety pin and set on fire. Splendor Squalor is out soon on Kanine . Xray Eyeballs - Die Little Love

  • Foo Fighters - There Is Nothing Left To Lose ..
My personal musical hiatus and longer-standing exile from musical innovation and creativity meant that grunge pretty much passed me by. It would not be a lie to say that I had never heard of Nirvana until the late nineties, by which time Kurt Cobain was long dead and grunge was fast becoming a relic of a bygone age itself. But then, just as we have post-punk, post-hardcore, post-rock, it is inevitable that we should have post-grunge. I have to admit though, I didn't catch onto that either at the time of its heyday and to this day I struggle ...

  • Live-Blogging Neil Young's 37-Minute Crazy H ..
Neil Young has released a recording on his website of what we assume is a recent jam session with his longtime backing band, Crazy Horse. The track is 37 minutes long. What are the odds you're going to listen to the whole thing? Small! So we listened for you. Here's what happens: 0:01 to 4:21 Over Ralph Molina's deliberate, thumping drum beat and Billy Talbot's simple, repetitive bass-part, rhythm guitarist Frank Sampedro plays slow, crackling chords while Young ventures forth some furtive lead lines. It's pretty much your standard middle-of-"Cowgirl-In-the-Sand" explora-jam. If ...

  • The Cult's Billy Duffy on Their New Album: ' ..
Filed under: News , Interview Herfitz PR On May 22, The Cult will be dropping 'Choice of Weapon,' the group's first studio album in five years. For the new collection, long-time Cult collaborator and producer Bob Rock ( Metallica , Bon Jovi ), who produced one of band's most successful albums, 1989's 'Sonic Temple,' put the finishing touches on the foundations that were laid by co-producer Chris Goss ( Queens of the Stone Age) . "If I wasn't on tour with The Cult, I did a lot of gardening, and stayed at home being a happy househusband," guitarist Billy Duffy laughingly tells ...

  • Sigiriya - Return to Earth
Way back in the mists of time…the mid 90’s…the term stoner rock was only just starting to surface, in fact stoner rock itself was only just starting to make its presence felt. Kyuss laid the foundations for the desert rock sound, Monster Magnet gave rock and roll and acidic, vintage garage sound it hadn’t seen for over 20 years, Fu Manchu doused it all liberally with a slacker, surf bum approach and doom bands such as Trouble and Cathedral were digging out the flares and adding a trippy groove to their de-tuned dirges. The first time ...

  • Gonjasufi: Feedin' Birds
It's the voice that grabs you. I get told to call the Warp office at three in the afternoon, but a series of mis-firing telephones begin to fray nerves on both ends of the line. Finally, a borrowed mobile phone is handed to Gonjasufi . "Hello?" he croaks. A voice spewed out by the Mojave desert, dried by endless, scorching winds. Remember how you heard 'A Sufi And A Killer' and thought it was aided by effects? Those weren't effects. On his new offering 'MU.ZZ.LE' the MC / vocalist / sayer of truths continues to play with his voice ...

  • o F F Love - Probably Love
Let’s face it: it’s hard to escape from R&B; these days. Over the past year or so artists like The Weeknd, Drake and Frank Ocean have been churning out delicate and velvety tracks with luxuriously sexy beats; provoking a whole wave of independent beatmakers and artists to follow suit with their own take on the brand. Enter o F F Love , who on the surface is just another dude trying to break into our newly established ‘post-R&B;’ world. His Facebook page lists his influences as Akon, Panda Bear and the Backstreet Boys; his profile picture an obscured image ...

  • Shorelines
Sometimes a post tells me how it wants to be written. My last post, about Stanley Greenthal, was absolutely intended to lead into this one. Here then is a feature about music from the British Isles, with four examples with roots in Ireland, and one from England. But, as I was putting all of this together, I was struck by how three of the album covers, including the Greenthal, feature water imagery. And then I realized that none of this music is purely traditional. All of it has roots in tradition, but some of it crossed the sea, while some ...

  • EP Review : Sea Oleena - Sleeplessness
Standing at seven tracks in length, Sea Oleena’s new release ' Sleeplessness ' could be considered more mini-album than EP, but that still wouldn’t justify the enormity of the music recorded by Montréal multi-instrumentalist Charlotte Loseth . The record is a beautiful warm blanket of songs, each one an epic cacophony of layered sounds, reverb and haunting female vocals delivered with the unassuming charm of a girl humming a song in her bedroom. Each hushed swirl of a song bleeds into the next, joined together by the rumbling and eerie ambient sounds throughout. For what on first listen could be dismissed ...
