The Dears

The Dears

Canada

The Dears is an indie rock band which formed in 1995 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The band consists of Murray Lightburn (vocals, guitar), Natalia Yanchak (vocals, keyboards), Jason Kent (guitar, vocals), Christopher McCarron (guitar), Rob Benvie (bass), Laura Willis (keyboards, vocal... Read More

  • Library Voices - Live At Zigfrid Von Underbe ..
Bring in the noise, bring in the fun! The perfect prelude for a jam-packed weekend is presented by Symptomatic and provided by the intensely bubbly and enthusiastic Library Voices, on a balmy Friday night. This seven-piece from Canada are so overly and overtly enthusiastic that it’s almost surreal, especially when in the midst of a London crowd, in Hoxton. Nothing comes between this band and their crowd though – Library Voices don’t understand or allow personal space – they get in each other’s space and the audience’s, with total unapologetic elation and ear to ear Cheshire cat grins ...

  • The Festival Diaries: The Great Escape in Br ..
As I sit down to scribe my look back at my first trip to Brighton for The Great Escape, I’m travelling on a bus from London to Liverpool, about to hit the ground running for the third music festival of this trip. Heading overseas to a music festival is nothing new for me, but it’s certainly nothing I take for granted. It’s an incredible opportunity to see some of the best talent in the world – new, upcoming and established – alongside our own Australian artists trying to make it in unique settings and locations.  Before I get onto ...

  • Krief: Dears Guitarist's Solo Album Fuelled ..
Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music , New Releases Indoor Recess Patrick Krief is probably best known as the lead guitarist for indie darlings the Dears , but what people are discovering is that the Montreal native is a formidable solo artist in his own right. Starting in 2007, Krief released a debut EP titled Take it or Leave , followed it up with 2009's Calm Awaits under the band outfit Black Diamond Bay, and just last week the 32-year old singer/songwriter released his third effort A Hundred Thousand Pieces on Pirates Blend , the label operated by reggae rockers Bedouin Soundclash ...

  • KRIEF Releases New Album 'Hundred Thousand P ..
Guitarist for The Dears, Patrick Krief made his frontman mark with his solo project Black Diamond Bay. Now, with the release of Krief's full-length solo album 'Hundred Thousand Pieces', out on April 17th, 2012 with Pirates Blend Records, we will see the Montrealer at his finest. With its beautifully heartbreaking, cinematic arrangements, one can hear the anguish of a heart left broken, beating its last tortured beats for the listener, exposing his soul. For a taste of what the album has to offer, have a listen to the first single "Simple Lives" below.

  • Track Of The Day 26/3 - Escapists
Funny how things change. Looking at the indie landscape, you would be hard pushed to name more than a few vital, relevant British guitar bands. Our North American cousins, meanwhile, are suffering from a deluge of thought provoking acts. So it's no surprise to discover the influences of a band like Escapists . Formed at university in Bristol, the four piece initially bonded over bands like The Dears, Fire">Arcade Fire and The National. It's the latter who make the biggest dent on their music. Escapists have a broad sweep, with their music suggesting a desire to connect with ...

  • CMW Photo Gallery: Day 2 Part 2 ft. The Dear ..
The second half of my night had me ducking out of the Comfort Zone to head a block down to El Mocambo (where the Aussie BBQ would be held a few days later) to suss it all out. I ended up hanging out downstairs with our editor Larry (his review of the night coming soon!) watching Galaxie , playing a kind of rock-n-roll/country fusion that I could imagine would pull a huge audience at Bluesfest. We were actually debating whether or not they had played it before; it just seems like they're such a perfect fit for the festival ...

  • CMW Photo Gallery: Day 2 Part 1 ft. Nova Hea ..
Day two of Canadian Music Week started with a trip to the Comfort Zone; nowhere near as cool or personalized as last night's expedition to the Bovine Sex Club , but a much bigger room, covered with blacklights. It's also the only venue I've seen that sells it's own brand of hand sanitizer. RPTZR are first off the bat for some synth-drenched indie pop. There's some incredibly catchy tunes here, but both singers insist on using auto-tune for the entire set; for me, personally, it gets slightly grating after three songs. That said, it's danceable ...

  • CMW 2012: From Connoisseurs of Porn to Cowpu ..
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Pkew Pkew Pkew (Gunshots) " Canadian Music Week " doesn't have quite the mystique as " South by Southwest ," but the 30-year-old Toronto-based music festival, happening March 21-25, has long been the launching pad for Canuck talent. Fire">Arcade Fire played CMW before they even put out 'Funeral.' Crystal Castles have done it regularly. Same with Carly Rae Jepsen before she became a Bieber -approved world conqueror. This year's schedule is filled with intrigue. There's Weakerthans lead singer John K. Samson showing off his solo project, the Dears are performing, three classic '90s ...

  • Video: The Darcys, ‘Josie’ (from their cover ..
I was pretty sure I’d hate this, but I don’t. The Darcys, a four-piece art-rock band from Toronto, in January released their interpretation of Steely Dan’s 1977 classic “Aja” for free download. Like their self-titled album released last year (produced by Murray Lightburn of the Dears), the Darcy’s “Aja” is noisy, brooding and dense. Yes, [...]

  • The Darcys - The Darcys (2011)
Shoegazer as a genre has enjoyed a nice resurgence in the last few years. Arguably Toronto's premier entrant in the realm are west-end boys The Darcys. On October 25th the group release their self-titled debut album for Arts & Crafts. Get ready to turn the calendar back to 1986 as The Darcys deliver an album that falls somewhere in the shoegaze spectrum between Darklands and Ferment. The record opens with the swirling, nebulous "100 Mile House", an intense track, seemingly primed for explosion. It smolders along until it morphs into "Don't Bleed Me", which is when the powder and ...

  • Best 50 Albums Of 2011
As 2011 quietly and quickly comes to a close it is a good time to reflect on the year just past. A year of exploration and discovery, fun and enjoyment. Pain and beauty. Joy and ragged edges. Trends and movements. Disappointment and surprise. Elation. Sometimes. Many albums were purchased, yes I still do that, and some exceeded expectations. Some didn't. One album though met and exceeded all expecations. The cover told a story. Through faces, homes, planes and mountains we peered into the depth of humanity. From within voices glistened and instruments sounded the memory lines of music. Foxes ...
