  • Feature: Unsound Festival New York 2012
by TMT Staff • April 2012 This year marked the third installment of the New York edition of Unsound , an offshoot of the annual Kraków fest (which will have its 10th installment in October). From April 18-22 and across five different venues — BAMcinématek, (Le) Poisson Rouge, Public Assembly, Lincoln Center, and ISSUE Project Room — Unsound New York 2012 featured music that included everything from warped dub and ambient metal to bass-heavy club music and techno. This meant we were treated to the likes of TMT favorites like Hype Williams, Sun Araw, Heat Wave, Laurel Halo, Peaking Lights, Actress, Demdike Stare, and ...

reports that legendary Australian singer Jimmy Little has passed away today (April 2). Little, who recently celebrated his 75th birthday, suffered from diabetes and kidney failure, undergoing a successful kidney transplant in 2004. He passed away this morning with his daughter by his side after a recent bout of ill health. His wife Marjorie Rose Little died last year aged 74. • 1988: Under the Milky Way
The Church : Under the Milky Way [ purchase ] When The Church’s 1988 album Starfish was released, I was just 13 months old. Armed with that information, you might not be surprised to discover that this week’s prompt left me scanning through a petty array of choices in my music library to make this post. Still, I ended up with enough options to need to whittle down to a final decision, and I think this song was inevitable the whole time. Somehow, “Under the Milky Way” managed to escape my ears—despite my elder brother’s pervasive collection of albums ...

  • Review: Various Artists - The Great Australi ..
“All-time” lists, be it football teams or songs, will always be met with conjecture . This is perhaps why The Great Australian Songbook – a set which promises “40 of Australia’s finest recording artists performing 40 of the best Australian songs from ‘last century’ and ‘this century’” – is, by its very nature, contentious. Many of the tunes (particularly slices from the “Last Century” disc, such as The Church’s ‘Under The Milky Way’ and The Easybeats’ ‘Friday On My Mind’) are unarguably classic cuts – poignant, nostalgic or fun-filled moments of Australian pop and rock that have grown to characterise a time ...

  • The Church - Starfish (1988)
Much as I have tried, I suspect I have not tried hard enough. I have to ask myself the question, ‘am I becoming tired of guitar driven bands?' The answer is no, I just struggle with this particular album. For some reason this does not move me as much as I expected, and indeed hoped it would. This is the best output by the Church , and it is solidly guitar driven no nonsense post punk inspired jangle pop. The twin guitars form the rhythm and provide a solid basis, then the bass line rolls in and finally the drums kick ...

  • Feature: Report: A Tale Of Two Homebakes
After a year lay-off, AARON CURRAN was on hand to witness Homebake’s return to the Domain in Sydney on Saturday (December 3). Photos by DANIEL BOUD . There were two Homebakes held at Sydney’s Domain on Saturday, with little in common between them. There was the guitar-dominated, heritage-focused Homebake headlined by older acts such as Grinderman, The Church, The Triffids and Ratcat, supported by younger bands with an indie rock aesthetic befitting the newly named (and smallest) Rowland S Howard stage. Then there was another Homebake, featuring a mellifluous if sometimes anodyne array of newer pop, dance and hip-hop ...

  • Feature: Trial By GIF: Homebake 2011
As part of a new series, MAX EASTON comprehensively reviews Homebake’s return to The Domain in Sydney last Saturday (December 3) using nothing but animated gifs. Full report soon. Following a year off due to poor planetary alignment , the annual (aside from last year) all-Australian (except for a handful of Kiwis and an English expat) music festival, Homebake, returned to Sydney’s The Domain for its 14th iteration. Billed as “the classic edition”, 2011's Homebake held much promise, namely being able to hear the Australian classics 'Wide Open Road,' 'Great Southern Land,' 'Under The Milky Way' and 'Somebody ...

I have a job starting up soon in Australia, where I will be based out of Adelaide. I have lived down under before, just over 10 years ago when I was an exchange student at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. I was told in my telephone interview that they wouldn't hold that against me. I look forward to exploring Adelaide, discovering new bands and yes, jaunting along to ...

  • Til The Day Is Done: RIP R.E.M.
R.E.M. has called it quits . A lot of cynics would say this move is coming about fourteen years to late, and that the band never should have reneged on their handshake deal that they'd break up if any of the original members left the group. That opinion would be wrong. Of the five albums Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, and Mike Mills have recorded since Bill Berry left the band in 1997, only one (2004's Around the Sun ) was truly a stinker, and the last two ( Accelerate and Collapse into Now ) have been damn good. And perhaps ...
