Ward, Tommy S ..Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Erika Goldring, Getty Images Two years ago, the music world was stunned by the loss of Alex Chilton , the man behind both the Box Tops and Big Star . Hailed as "a Rosetta stone for a whole generation" by Peter Buck , Chilton's death came only a few days before he was supposed to perform at SXSW , and the event instead was recast as a tribute concert. Big Star - No. 1 Record (1972)Alex Chilton, the driving force behind Big Star, started his music career as the frontman for a blue-eyed soul band called the Box Tops which had mixed success in the US during the late sixties and early seventies. But the Box Tops were a creation of record moguls and Chilton, who was a capable musician and songwriter in his right, soon tired of being the puppet for a bunch of old farts looking to make money.
