UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

The Books are an experimental band from the United States. Members: Paul de Jong & Nick Zammuto.

  • Mix Tape: MY MIXTAPE
Requested by jamal • Compiled by Alice of New York Your oh-so-specific title doesn’t really give much to work with, but I decided it could be interpreted as, “Make me a mixtape to be my personal anthem/soundtrack”. I tried to select songs which, together, form a theoretical depiction of “you” as as seen by a complete stranger. Dearest “MY MIXTAPE”, you appear to be individualistic (emphasis on “MY!”), passionate (ALL CAPS!), and taken to flights of whimsy (in that you expect someone to be able to fill a request like ‘MY MIXTAPE’). Here is “YOUR MIXTAPE”: 01. NHB (Pryde ...

And so it goes, the five-year interval between their previous two albums was the ominous sign we all thought it might be: The Books have assumed the responsibilities of the firemen from Fahrenheit 451 and decided to formally set ablaze any possibility of future work. As if Nick Zammuto recently announcing a new album sans Paul de Jong wasn’t enough of an indication, he also makes things undeniably clear in an interview with Pitchfork: “It seems the air has gone out of the Books for the last time,” wrote Zammuto in an email. “It’s been an extraordinarily painful ...

Zammuto - Too Late to Topologize Nick Zammuto has officially announced that The Books, one of my favorite bands of all time, is calling it quits. I really want to love his new project, Zammuto. What I’ve heard so far doesn’t have the magic of Thought for Food , The Lemon of Pink , or Lost and Safe . Maybe the collage thing just isn’t new and mysterious anymore, but these tracks feel more frantic and less well crafted. I’m holding out hope; this track is pretty good. But I’ll sincerely miss The Books.

Various sites are reporting that The Books have called it a day.  The New York City experimental duo comprised of Nick Zammuto and Paul de Jong — have called it quits after four albums and one EP. In an email to Pitchfork, Zammuto said, ”It seems the air has gone out of the Books for the last time. It’s [...]

  • The Books se separa

  • The Books Call It Quits
The Books have confirmed that they are set to part company and work on separate projects. The Books were always a band out of time. In a literal sense, Nick Zammuto and Paul de Jong built their music out of an enormous archive of old tapes, recording snippets of conversation from archaic radio shows. However alongside this, the duo's output made little sense within the wider musical community until the rise of Hypnagogic pop / chillwave. With the cultural setting now ready for The Books , the duo have - logically enough - decided to call it quits. In an email to Pitchfork ...

  • R.I.P. The Books + Long Live Zammuto
From KCRW DJ Eric J Lawrence: Learning of the demise of the innovative experimental indie rock duo The Books today was disappointing.  Their 2010 album, “The Way Out”, was one of my favorite releases of that year and it is marked by such a distinctive style that I doubt if it will ever sound dated. Combining sound collage assemblages with delicate songwriting touches gave The Books an ability to go just about anywhere with their music, from using snippets of children’s stories, to covering Nick Drake’s “Cello Song” (for the Red Hot ...

Nick Zammuto, left, and his new band After four albums of brilliantly bizarre sound collages and more than 10 years of existence, experimental duo the Books , aka Nick Zammuto and Paul de Jong, are calling it quits. "It seems the air has gone out of the Books for the last time," wrote Zammuto in an email. "It's been an extraordinarily painful year coming to the realization that there was no way forward for the band. I love the Books and all that it became, and it still feels strange to me that such an odd little project moved people ...

  • Zammuto: "F U C-3PO"
The Books work on their own clock, so it was something of a relief when one-half of that team, Nick Zammuto, began regularly posting new songs from his Zammuto project on his blog last year. Those songs (and others) are set to be compiled on Zammuto's forthcoming self-titled record; one of them, "F U C-3PO", has already seen the light of day via the recently released Idiom Wind EP. Anyone familiar with the Books' expansive songcraft will easily take to the song's jittery crackle, as Nick Zammuto's puckered vocals weave in and out of sproingy bass and ...

Nobodaddy here, reporting from the trenches, where, for the past two months following my deft and dutiful reporting on The Books’ mastermind Nick Zammuto’s colorfully-titled Zammuto project and the release of its first single , I’ve been waiting outside his house in my 1993 Honda Civic to tease details about whatever release may be forthcoming from the man’s garbage cans. I haven’t showered since the YMCA kicked me out of their bathroom on Christmas Eve, and I’ve been surviving solely on a particularly long English cucumber and one of those “squeezable” bottles of jelly. But now ...

  • Zammuto- Idiom Wind EP
On his latest EP, the Books member Nick Zammuto deals in the same experimental sounds that made his main band’s previous album so great. I will say the singer-songwriter element of the three songs on this release is more prevalent, though. WATCH THE REVIEW
