  • Owen – Ghost Town
As Mike Kinsella's sixth album under his solo pseudonym Owen , Ghost Town is a record that comes replete with layers of instrumentation, as well as tiers of contexts and meaning, each just waiting to be peeled back and explored. And as a 10-year project in the making, Owen and its newest full-length Ghost Town appear to see Kinsella – and indeed his elusive, dual persona of Owen – exactly where he should be. As an album written in the wake of his firstborn’s birth, it isn’t surprising that Ghost Town is a record scattered with homely and childlike references ...

  • New Poster For 'Crank' Duo Mark Neveldine & ..
With "Crank" directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor taking on the "Ghost Rider" franchise/Nicolas Cage vehicle, we had originally thought there might some crazy B-film genius to be had. Add to that new cast members like Idris Elba and Ciaran Hinds and things seem to be going in the right direction, right? Well, the movie debuted recently at AICN's Butt-Numb-A-Thon, and it looks like it's simply more of the same from the Marvel character. We wrapped up the tweets and reaction from the premiere but the most eye-catching, we thought, was from one Jordan Hoffman who wrote ...

  • These Ghost Bands Keep Haunting Me
Ghost Mall From: New York, United States When I posted a track from That Ghost back in March little did I realise that 8 months later I'd still be bringing you ghost related bands. I can't believe that there are so many plying their trade across the world in 2011. What started as an interesting diversion has turned into a seemingly never ending quest to bring you as many ghost related bands as I can find. Well, for those ghost related completists out there, today you can add another to your growing collection with the mysterious Ghost Mall ...

  • The Bats' new record Free All the Monsters f ..
So you probably have that one friend who’s all about Flying Nun and New Zealand. You try to keep up, but all you have is a download of that In Love with These Times compilation and season 1 of Flight of the Conchords . You fall back on The Clean in conversation, and maybe last year you checked out the Verlaines CD reissues (if you didn’t… do it), but that smug sonovabitch still thinks he’s got one up on you every time he puts on a new record and talks about members going solo. Well, we’ve got ...

  • Soul Man: Steve Cropper
Relaxing on the porch of a Tennessee cottage, Steve Cropper appears completely at home. Born and raised in the South, the guitarist is now in semi-retirement. Doing the occasional session as he sees fit, Cropper makes time for plenty of charity work and opportunities to improve his golfing handicap. Yet in a strange sort of way, his life has come full circle with his home in Nashville just a few miles from where he cut one of his first sessions. “I got a little into the pop situation and had a friend who wanted to record, a buddy of mine ...

  • Martyn - Ghost People
The sophomore effort by Dutch producer Martyn isn’t anything like Great Lengths , in subject matter or content at least. The debut was an insular, deeply personal record. It tapped into the half-step aura pervading the electronic music scene at that moment, taking aspects from it and other genres to create a refined record that was looking ahead into the future. For Ghost People , Martyn’s looking into the past, specifically at the ground roots aspect of being a DJ, sharing and playing music that people loved without the added baggage of trendiness or popularity. The title itself has it ...

  • Warm Ghost – Narrows
What is it with band names containing the word ghost? A few years ago there was a influx of bands who simultaneously decided that the route to success was appending the word Wolf to their name. In 2001 it seems that ghost is the new wolf. American duo Warm Ghost are another to add to the growing list of ghost related bands and it's not just their name that lacks originality. Their new album, Narrows , is a collection of electronica that owes such a debt to The Human League (original vintage), Depeche Mode and Talk Talk that it's ...

  • Album Review: Owen - Ghost Town
Mike Kinsella is best known as a stalwart of the Chicago indie scene, having been a part of many projects best known only to Illinois music lovers. His minimalist, primarily self-sufficient endeavor Owen is officially known as a side-project but, after a decade’s worth of material released, it certainly deserves to be considered as seriously as one would any other of his offerings. Opener ‘Too Many Moons’ can legitimately be described without irony as gorgeous, commencing as it does with plucked nylon string guitar and whimsical woodwind-esque held notes before soft, well placed strings drop in and out to ...

  • Hidden Flick: Another Ghost, Brother
[Originally Published: September 14, 2011] Inevitably, during our various existential journeys, we seek another earth, another space to explore, we wander amidst the gloom, and ponder it all, and face the reality that some one, some thing, controls our fate. The prospects of what we want to be are somehow always clouded by the ghosts of what we were, right? To change all of that is to see the world through a child’s eyes, a kid-like point of view, eh? Talihina Sky . Kings of Leon. Final edition—#15, 75 in total—of season 5. The documentary appears so innocent ...

  • JUNIUS STEPPING IN FOR GHOST ON ENSLAVED/ALC ..
Junius are one of those bands whose albums I feel kinda lukewarm on, but who I think are totally fantastic live. And so while I’m still pretty bummed that Ghost had to drop off of Enslaved’s upcoming North American headlining tour with Alcest, I am really happy that Junius are now taking their spot. Like [...]

  • Ghostface Killah Sues Universal
Last month, we reported that TV composer Jack Urbont was suing Ghostface Killah because Ghost's 2000 album Supreme Clientele allegedly unlawfully sampled "The Iron Man Theme", which Urbont wrote for the 1960s TV show "The Marvel Super-Heroes". At the same time as Ghost fends off that lawsuit, he's filing one of his own. Billboard reports that Ghost is suing the Universal Music Group for unpaid royalties.
