  • Stream: Ra Ra Riot and The Submarines
Syracuse bred Ra Ra Riot has created a lot of buzz with their energetic shows, leading to an appearance at the CMJ Music Marathon and favorable reviews from SPIN.com. Since then, it's been an upward spiral of positivity, as they went to tour with Tokyo Police Club and then headlined their first tour in 2007.

Hailing from Keswick, ON, The Elwins have garnered an impressive pile of attention and praise considering their relative youth. They have already performed alongside acts like Tokyo Police Club, Arkells and Thing">Sweet Thing, and at major festivals including SXSW, CMW, POP Montreal, and the Halifax Pop Explosion.

  • Turn up the Volume
Volume 1 , the new EP from The Elwins , probably isn't as good as it could have been. I mean, when you factor in the strength of their debut album , how long they've apparently been working on its follow-up (which may or may not be this EP -- their official bio is kind of vague), and the fact that they've not only increased their numbers but also brought in some outside help in the form of Doctor Ew and Thomas , the whole thing just feels a little insubstantial. That said, even if Volume 1 isn't everything I would ...

For the second half of my favourite albums list, click here ! 12. Coeur de Pirate , Blonde Let's face it: with her voice and her ear for melody, Beatrice Martin could probably sing in Simlish and still have it sound good. Or, more realistically, after the success of her self-titled debut, she probably could've allowed herself to coast a little on Blonde . Instead, she improved on an already good thing, and showed that there was a whole lot more where her first album came from. Download " Loin d'ici " 11. • Listen: The Yupps – 'Life'
You may, or may not have already heard of The Yupps. Anyway, they are a french trio from Metz, who formed in 2008 after a Bloc Party gig, and have since supported artists like MGMT, Darwin Deez and Panic At The Disco. They recently released an EP called Life , which has nothing to do with their previous release, Ground Zero (2010). Here they display their influences, from the likes of Foals, Cut Copy and Tokyo Police Club. The title-track features a heavy bassline and some really good, multilayered, unpredictable synths, and if we want to stay in France, we can ...
