Sunny Day Real Estate

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Sunny Day Real Estate is an American band from Seattle, Washington. In the 1990s, The group expanded off of the Grunge style that was popular in the local scene to make a more melodic sound. While not the first band to be classified as emo, they were instrumental in establishing the ... Read More

  • No Regrets Coyote - "BOKKUS is Dead" [EP] [B ..
No Regrets Coyote formed in September of 2011 in Nashville, Tennessee. The original three members Danny, Ian, and Steve played a couple shows as a Weezer cover band and decided that they wanted to start writing originals. They added Tom to bass and quickly began writing new, original material. They took influence from punk bands like Against Me! and Letterman, 90’s emo bands such as Smashing Pumpkins and Sunny Day Real Estate, as well as other Nashville locals like Diarrhea Planet and Jeff The Brotherhood.

  • Album Review: Daytrader - Twelve Years
Long Island's Daytrader release their debut full-length record since signing to Rise Records. The band's quintessentially emo influences like Sunny Day Real Estate and Further Seems Forever really shine through, pushing "Twelve Years" on to the must-hear lists of any original emo fans and respectable indie rockers. "Twelve Years" plays like a nineties/early 2000s records - not surprising really, given that it was produced by Mike Sapone (Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, I Am The Avalanche). It's Sapone's slick production combined with the bands' certain penchant for writing impeccable lyrics that create a classic in the ...

  • Album Review: Say Anything - Anarchy My Dear ..
It took me a quite a few listens to form an opinion on Say Anything ’s fifth record Anarchy My Dear . My first listen was to dismiss the record as nothing special. My second spin I concluded it was a mere angry record. By the time i hit play for the fifth and sixth time I finally started to appreciate the craft within the songs on this record and now, as it plays again in the background I think i get it. I think I get what this record is. A juxtaposition of calm and stormy. Making the beautiful ugly ...

  • Album Review: Joyce Manor - Of All Things I ..
Right from the opening track ( "These Kind of Ice Skates" ) it is clear that we are faced with a slightly different Joyce Manor to the one whose self-titled debut LP fitted snugly between Thing">Swamp Thing and Make Do And Mend on 6131 Records’ release catalog. Where sunny 90's melodies and pop-punk undercurrents were previous buried by outrageously dirty guitars and a bass tone so low most laptop speakers wouldn't even pick them up, they have been put under a magnifying glass on "Of All Things I Will Soon Grow Tired" . Stylistically, Joyce Manor still work within the ...

other than the sunny day real estate show i saw all the way back in 95, me thinks, i havent seen a more intense show than david eugene edwards and his 16 horsepower at schubas sometime in the late 90′s, early 00′s. i know i have spoken, in depth, about bout both shows so i [...]

  • Jeremy Enigk Covers Damien Jurado
Well, this is pretty sweet. Sunny Day Real Estate frontman Jeremy Enigk was the party responsible for bringing singer-songwriter Damien Jurado to Sub Pop way the hell back in the late ’90s. And now Enigk has recorded a smoothly pretty version of Jurado’s quite-nice 2008 song “Last Rights,” a propos of absolutely nothing. Stream Enigk’s [...]

While a number of notable singer-songwriters, such as Bill Callahan, recently paid their debt to Leonard Cohen in the run-up to his latest release, Damien Jurado has been similarly honored as a new record hits shelves by a few fellow Pacific Northwest musicians influenced by his work. Dolerean’s Al James, The Head and the Heart’s [...]

  • Hits From The Box #45 - The Heat Is Finally ..
It's been a curly, surly old summer here in Australia. Nowhere near as devastating as last year, true, but rather wet and uninviting nonetheless. That said, there arent many places in the world where you can have one of the wettest seasons of the year, and still walk around in shorts, get a tan and drink a beer without getting hypothermia. So, let's keep the glass at half full. This last weekend has seen a late charge for summer though, and whilst I spent my Sunday cleaning the bathtub and marking assignments based on A Streetcar Named Desire ...

  • The Jealous Sound: A Gentle Reminder
The Jealous Sound A Gentle Reminder Music Is Subjective [2012] Fire Note Says: A solid melodic rock return after nine years for The Jealous Sound. Album Review: I am sure that nine years in the music business probably equates around 100 years in the real world but that is how long it has been since The Jealous Sound released their critically praised debut Kill Them With Kindness [2003] . The group's sophomore follow up, A Gentle Reminder , is a sonic success and sounds like the band never took any time off with its soaring guitars, strong emo grooves and frontman ...

  • Music: Playlisted: The Jealous Sound
We get a lot of records sent to us here at The A.V. Club . Fortunately, we end up liking some of them. In Playlisted , we share our latest recommendations. Album: A Gentle Reminder by The Jealous Sound (out now on Music Is Subjective) Press play if you like: Catchy, huge-sounding rock songs with sensitive-guy lyrics; mid-’90s emo (à la Sunny Day Real Estate , Knapsack , Jimmy Eat World , Samiam ); palm-muting.  Some background: The last that most of its fans heard of The Jealous Sound was 2003’s excellent Kill Them With Kindness , which perfectly streamlined the post-hardcore of Blair ...

  • Cloud Nothings: Attack On Memory
Cloud Nothings Attack On Memory Carpark Records [2012] Fire Note Says: Cloud Nothings evolve again on their spectacular sophomore outing Attack On Memory ! Album Review: Sometimes it is amazing how much can change in a year as the ever evolving Cloud Nothings follows up a really good self-titled debut record released last January with the even better Attack On Memory . The once basement self recorded project of Dylan Baldi has now progressed past just getting in the studio with a producer to making Cloud Nothings a full fledged band and recording with Steve Albini in Chicago. The transition was fast ...
