  • Strand of Oaks [new music] [interview]
Something about Strand of Oaks is peculiar and calming . Featured as a showcase artist last year at SXSW, finishing his third album, Timothy Showalter has come a long way in past few years. His second album Pope Killdragon was … Continue reading →

  • Other Voices, Other Rooms: 5 Folkblogs to Fo ..
As I wrote just over a year ago in a 2-part feature on How To Be A Coverblogger [Pt. 1 / Pt. 2], keeping a coverblog requires a touch of obsession, an itch to live the writing life, and a willingness to keep a keen eye on a select handful of trusted sources. But though [...]

  • Live Blog: Crooked Fingers / Strand of Oaks ..
Crooked Fingers / Strand of Oaks Mississippi Studios; Portland, OR [11-19-2011] by Gabe Vodicka on 12-02-2011 I had seen Tim Showalter perform as Strand of Oaks not three months ago ; all by his lonesome, he’d managed to create something singular and revelatory. This time, he’d come armed with a full band, or almost full; no drummer, instead a machine whose volume sometimes threatened to overtake that of the three men on stage. There were instances, however, where it felt very much like a rock show. Showalter’s visage is one of stoner metal glory daze, and the music approached ...

  • Ian Fays, Strand of Oaks and Crooked Fingers ..
It’s the always eerie night before Thanksgiving and I’m already seeing double. This time we cannot blame the Wild Turkey. San Francisco’s Ian Fays include twins Lizz and Sara, older sister Lena (on triangle, tambourine and more!), Lizz’s husband on drums plus “a friend” on bass. It is, as they announce, “a family affair”. Lizz [...]

  • Strand Of Oaks - Pope Killdragon (2010)
Strand of Oaks is the name by which singer-songwriter Timothy Showalter prefers to go by. His 2010 offering on eMusic, Pope Killdragon  is only available as a digital file but really does deserve better. This album is one of those hidden gems which, from time to time, you somehow manage to uncover and which completely takes you by surprise. I cannot remember how I found this, but it is certainly one of the albums of the year. The themes of Showalter's lyrics are diverse. They also do not shy away from imagery which can be bizarre at times, and ...

  • Crooked Fingers at The Crocodile 11/20
A lot of the time great pieces of art cannot be created by force. Eric Bachmann from Crooked Fingers took a very extreme version of this approach in creating his latest album. Instead of simply waiting for the creativity to flow, he decided to deny it entirely. However, he is now back to making music. His latest album 'Breaks in the Armor' is a new musical expression of vulnerability. Come to The Crocodile on November 20 to catch Crooked fingers with Strand of Oaks and special guest Shelby Earl!

Sounds You Need to Know by Julie Stoller Tonight in Town: Crooked Fingers w/ Strand of Oaks at T.T. the Bear's 8pm doors | $12 | tickets Crooked Fingers - Typhoon Best of 2011 Artist Selection - It's fortuitous that Eric Bachmann's " other band ," Archers of Loaf , had such a celebrated reunion earlier this year with an initial surprise show at the Cat's Cadle in Carrboro, NC, then the Sasquatch Music Festival, and almost a full U.S. tour (I say almost, as they skipped Boston - next time, guys).
