  • Fifty Outsiders : 1 - 10
Read the first part of Kris Needs' Fifty Outsiders, a departure point for your own investigation into outsider artists. 1. SUN RA Claiming to come from Saturn, Sun Ra was an outsider all his life, whether experiencing abhorrent racism growing up in Alabama to fearlessly reconstructing jazz, pioneering the modern independent label releasing (literally) countless albums on his El Saturn imprint. Ra left this planet in 1993 but is increasingly hailed as one of the last century‘s greatest musicians and composers. 2. MOONDOG Through the 1950s and ’60s, blind New York street legend Louis Thomas Hardin, AKA Moondog, ’The ...

  • Buttonhead Bake Champion Bread
Buttonhead , a rampaging rainbow of noise-pop with a penchant for polymesmeric song structures and fractured melodies, is a multi-headed beast with one shivering b’glittered body; comprising Ross Blake, Tobias Warwick Jones, Valentina Magaletti, Eloise Goulder and Daniel John Boyle. The group’s wildly disparate influences of tropicalia, avant pop, spacious psyche, experimental rock, yé-yé and anthemic film music have been decisively distilled into their long-awaited debut album 3D Opera Whale , to be released on London based Horse Arm this coming June 30th 2012. The digital release of the LP is slated for July 30th 2012. The result is a ...

  • Bullion - Love Me Oh Please Love Me [EP]
London's Nathan Jenkins initially came to the attention of many through a 2008 project entitled Pet Sounds: In the Key of Dee : an ambitious mash up that belied the influence of mercurial beatmaker J Dilla on his work as Bullion - blending the late Detroit native's productions with the Beach Boys' classic. Bits and pieces of wonky post-Dilla/Flying Lotus-type beats followed the likes of 'Get Familiar' and 'Young Heartache' demonstrating a mature and confident approach to production, leading to the multi-faceted genre dodging of last year's You Drive Me to Plastic album for Young Turks. Now Jenkins ...

  • Lower Dens - Nootropics
I was having trouble describing what Lower Dens are trying to do on their new album Nootropics so I looked up the definition of “nootropics”. It is the collective term for 'smart drugs'; the narcotics that supposedly can enhance memory and intelligence, and it is derived from two Greek words which mean “mind” and “to bend”. This fact certainly helped me get a better handle on this 51 minute, shifting, dream-like collection of songs that manages to move between lengthy but intricate post-punk, folk melodies, drone and motorik repetition with a deceptive ease. Lower Dens were formed in 2009 by ...

  • Beta Test @ Velvet!
