  • Jamaica's Reggae Film Festival Tells Island' ..
While it’s unlikely any of the movies presented at the 5th Annual Reggae Film Festival will attract the widespread interest generated by director Kevin McDonald’s “Marley” doc, films such as "Studio Drummie One," "Showtime!" and "Sing Your Song" are just as significant in chronicling the multifaceted narrative that is Jamaica's popular music history.

  • Seen Kevin Macdonald's Marley biopic? Here's ..
From Kingston to Lewisham, here are five other must-see reggae movies The Harder They Come (Dir. Perry Henzell, Jamaica, 1972) Jamaica's first feature, and the one against which others are measured. The plot – poor country boy seeks fortune in city – is archetypal, but Henzell cleverly turns our admiration for hero Ivan ( Jimmy Cliff in incendiary form) into revulsion, as the film shifts through melodrama, comedy and musical into tragedy. Immortal movie moments – "You think the hero can be dead before the last reel?" scoffs Ivan at one point – and a stunning soundtrack led by Cliff's title song make ...

  • Hot Docs 2012 Line Up Unveiled
Hot Docs will always hold a special place in my heart as my son was born right in the middle of last year’s festival. With a newly renovated home at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, this year’s edition of the festival has much to celebrate. Last year Hot Docs screened many great documentaries including PROJECT NIM, BEING ELMO, BEAUTY DAY, and BEATS, RHYMES, & LIFE: THE TRAVELS of A TRIBE CALLED QUEST. Not do be outdone, this year’s festival features documentaries centered around the likes of musicians such as LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy and Bob Marley, female wrestlers, and even DRIVE director Nicholas Winding Refn. There are also documentaries that focus on marketing sex to tweens, the life of Ethel Kennedy, corruption in Liberia, and a look at how the economic crisis has crippled the city of Detroit from the directors of JESUS CAMP. Believe me, that is not even scratching the surface of what the festival has to offer this year. Below are a few of the highlights from the various Hot Docs programs: In addition to the opening night Canadian premiere of Alison Klayman’s AI WEIWEI: NEVER SORRY, an up-close portrait of the renowned Chinese activist and artist, other notable films in the Special Presentations program include: Bart Layton’s THE IMPOSTER, which depicts a lost and found boy who may not be who he claims; James Swirsky and Lisanne Pajot’s INDIE GAME: THE MOVIE, a look into the lives of video game developers; Lauren Greenfield’s THE QUEEN OF VERSAILLES, a portrait of an eccentric billionaire family facing the ...

  • Watch: Clips From Richard Linklater's 'Berni ..
A couple of clips for you from two auteurs, bringing some intersting entries to the arthouse next month. First up is an oddball look at Richard Linklater's slightly twisted, based on a true story tale "Bernie." Starring Matthew McConaguhy, Jack Black and Shirley Maclaine, the film tells the story of a beloved mortician (Black) in a small Texas town who befriends a mean old widow (Shirley MacLaine) and commits a horrific crime. This slow burn thriller has been quietly making the festival rounds since last summer, and will screen at SXSW tomorrow. The scene below is an intriguing one ...

  • Watch: U.K. Trailer For Kevin Macdonald's 'M ..
After literally years in development, a process which saw original director Jonathan Demme leave the project and replaced by "The Eagle" and "Last King Of Scotland" helmer Kevin Macdonald, the long awaited "Marley" is on its way to theaters. And after some festival appearances at TIFF and most recently at Berlin (with SXSW around the corner), the U.K. trailer has landed, giving fans a first taste of what to expect. As we noted in our recent review of the film, "Marley" certainly isn't lacking in content. Running nearly 2 1/2 hours, the documentary tackles the reggae and ...

  • Your Grammys 2012 Wrap-Up...
First things last: you can find the winners at the bottom of this post. Meanwhile: the post-game! Sasha Frere-Jones ripped Chris Brown a new asshole, and felt generally glum: There was little to redeem the 54th Grammy Awards… Woman-beating rage-broccoli Chris Brown lip-synced his single “Turn Up The Music” (without being threatened by Sir Elton John) and danced roughly as well as a third-rate Chicago footwork dancer. He ended his performance by back-flipping off the stage, though sadly not off the earth… Flavorpill has a nive roundup of the night’s weirdest moments: 10. Victor Cruz’s salsa … Don’t ...

  • Grammys 2012: Didn't Adele almost have it al ..
So, it would have been Adele's night - and some sort of irony that a singer whose launchpad was funded, in part, from the Brit Award receipts turns up at the bigger award ceremony and carries off the prizes. It would have been Adele's night, but for the death of Whitney Houston. One room. So many executives who have pushed their talent a little too hard, or turned a blind eye and sent them out working when they weren't fit. So many musicians who know that the difference between "tragic Whitney" and them was luck rather than judgement ...
