To know Bob Dylan is to experience him live But for those making do with Dylan's sprawling bootlegs as he criss-crosses the globe this year Thursday's Dylan Fest offered the goods from a revolving lineup of guests – including Steely Dan's Donald Fagen and Boz Scaggs – during the first...

  • Kindness - Interview - 2012 (Part One) [Feat ..
Back in March of this year we sat down with Kindness in a Stoke Newington Cafe to discuss his debut album, which has been released three days earlier, 'World You Need A Change Of Mind'. The record had genuinely not left the RFB office stereo since its release and we ventured out to his sold out show at XOYO 48 hours before the interview and experienced a show that still stands as our gig of the year. Like many we came across Kindness for the first time back in late 2008, stumbling across a good looking Myspace page and first ...

  • Hospitality Tackles Steely Dan’s Rikki Don’t ..
We’re huge fans of A.V. Club’s Undercover series of videos in which they give participating bands a list of covers to choose one from and film the resulting version. We’ve probably posted most, if not all, of the inventive covers since the series started, but the latest installment kicks so much ass in our humble opinion that we didn’t want to wait until tomorrow to share. Brooklyn indie pop trio Hospitality , who claim to have never played a cover before this one, give a krautrock spin, complete with motorik beat, to the Steely Dan classic ...

  • Hospitality Cover Steely Dan
This right here is Hospitality’s first time attempting a cover, a fact I know because they say it in the beginning of this video. Research! Steely Dan’s “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” may never have been the obvious answer to this particular bit of Hospitality trivia, but the band’s krautrock makeover is a sweet fit. [...]

  • Video: A.V. Undercover 2012: Hospitality cov ..
The latest in a long parade of Merge Records-affiliated bands to grace our round room, Hospitality comes to us (and you!) from Brooklyn, hot on the heels of their self-titled debut album. (We gave it an A- , and recommend it to you highly.) We caught them on their second of three Chicago stops in the space of just a couple of months; they've been winning hearts and minds while on tour with Wild Flag and Here We Go Magic, among others. I was a bit surprised to learn that this version of Steely Dan's 1974 classic "Rikki Don ...

  • Steely Dan Sunday: “Glamour Profession” (198 ..
Two things that became apparent to me when first hearing “Glamour Profession” at the time when Gaucho first appeared: 1) it was about drug dealing to well-heeled clients in Southern California 2) it was Steely Dan’s most explicit excursion into disco, at the moment when disco when in its dying throes. Does having a disco beat make a song bad? [...]

  • Stream: Shintaro Sakamoto
I have a soft spot in my heart for J-Pop/Rock. I have absolutely no clue what any of the songs are about, but there's a glorious excess there (and an absurd ear for hooks) that is hard to deny. So, it's weird how much I enjoy a subdued (by J-Pop standards) track from Shintaro Sakamoto (a big star in his homeland). Sounding like a long lost relic of 70s soft rock radio (think Steely Dan in Japanese), Shintaro Sakamoto's "In a Phantom Mood" is one of the most bizarrely enjoyable tracks of the wee

  • Steely Dan Sunday: “Hey Nineteen” (1980)
Steely Dan isn’t the band people look to for documenting watershed moments in cultural history, but I think that intentionally or not, they did so with their top ten hit “Hey Nineteen.” I remember the first time hearing this tale of a man being frustrated by a girl he’s wooing not knowing about “‘Retha Franklin.” Along with that, there’s these [...]

  • Fang Island Announce New Album, Release Deta ..
Brooklyn progressive, post-punk outfit Fang Island have announced that their sophomore effort Major will be released July 24 via Sargent House. In a recent press release, the band stated that they chose the album title in honor of “Valley girl colloquialism,” “major key,” and “Steely Dan’s ‘Any Major Dude’,” among many other reasons. If Major is anything like the band’s debut or better, it will surely have potential to be one of the best of the year. Keep an eye out for more details; we’ll surely have them as they’re released. Fang Island has also released ...
