  • Steer clear of Donlands & Mortimer
It's awfully nice of Donlands & Mortimer to include a track-by-track listing of who wrote which song on their debut, Scylla . After all, it makes it easy to tell which songs to skip and which to listen to. That may be a bit mean. But I can't think of any better way to describe my feelings towards the EP. The band has three songwriters, but only one of them -- Carmen Elle -- writes songs that aren't horrible. Her contributions (" Osmosis " and "Starboard") have an obvious structure, feature arrangements in which all six of the band members have clearly-defined roles ...

  • Feature: An EBAGC Tour Diary Pt 2
Seafood in abundance, a six-berth campervan, sunburn and mineral springs – MARCUS HOBBS reports on the final leg of East Brunswick All Girls Choir’s recent tour of New Zealand. Part one here . Day 11: Where Are All The Chicks, Penguins And Nuns? On the drive from Christchurch to Dunedin we pulled into a truck stop for grub. Josh, unaware, had picked an egg and bacon pie which later coerced him into saying, “I would do anything for diarrhea.” The only reason he finished it was “because I had paid for it”. Harsh lessons. We were on our way down to ...

  • Feature: High Tide 2010: The Boat That Rocke ..
LAWSON FLETCHER took to the high seas (aka Melbourne’s Port Phillip Bay) for the inaugural High Tide, an afternoon of bands, beers and a boat called 'Lady Cutler'. Photos by LEAH ROBERTSON . As if it weren’t enough for the indie set to colonise Melbourne’s pubs, warehouses, Lithuanian restaurants and pizza shops , we have now extended our reach beyond land itself, taking to the city’s “high seas” for inaugural boat party High Tide. Cynicism aside, High Tide is a splendid idea and one that was executed with class: pile a bunch of people that already wear boat ...

  • Favours For Sailors Split
Fans of hotly tipped indie upstarts Favours For Sailors have been left stunned after the band announced they are to split. Favours For Sailors first burst onto the music scene with a series of sensational shows last year. Gathering a rabid cult following - some of whom seemed to follow them from gig to gig - the band penned a deal with Tough Love Records. The band's debut mini-album 'Furious Sons' showed a group with astonishing potential. Sure, it was rough around the edges but beneath the frenetic indie-pun lay a beating pop heart, and the rave reviews rolled in. Clash ...

  • The first night of Nic Fanciulli’s tour: Chi ..
Nic Fanciulli puffs on a cigarette at 646 N. Franklin Street in Chicago. A train rackets overhead, clanging on rusty steel girders that scream renovate me. A man in a wheelchair with no feet asks for change. The only thing that shines is the moon and a flashing yellow light. Fanciulli exhales and drops his cigarette, staring at some imaginary point down the street like a captain anticipating stormy weather starboard. It's the first night of Nic Fanciulli's Global Underground North American tour and by God, it better go well. Read more on Beatportal
