Spacemen 3

Spacemen 3 were an English psychedelic rock band who formed in 1982 and whose career spanned from the post-punk to space rock and shoegaze eras. Read More

  • Remix It Up
Wooden Shjips From: San Francisco, United States In the age of the re-invention it may sound like sacrilege to admit that I've never been a lover of remixes. Ruining an otherwise serviceable track by adding loads of unnecessary bells and whistles is not my idea of art or entertainment. There are also far too many remixes which are little more than mutton donning lamb's clothing which has never been a good look. So I approached San Franciscan wierdos Wooden Shjips' three track ep of "remixes" with that sinking feeling you get when pushing open the door to the ...

Better late than never, ATS’ Top 50 Albums of 2011 is finally here, and trust me, it’s worth the wait. Also, take a listen to tracks from the albums on our Spotify playlist here. Enjoy! 50. Battles- Gloss Drop By Charles With Battles last year announcing the departure of Tyondai Braxton, many wondered what the follow up to 2007′s Mirrored would hold. But it wasn’t as if the remaining members lacked experience – this is, after all, the “super group” boasting members from Don Caballero and Helmet – and they duly pulled through. Pulling in favours from Matias Aguayo ...

  • Fiese Drogen

  • Strangely Transfixed By Royal Baths (Updated ..
I'm still not wholeheartedly convinced that I like Royal Baths . I mean, the Brooklyn-via-San Francisco band tick the right boxes - dark, brooding, garage based tendencies, drone tinged rock, a love of Spacemen 3... Yet I can't quite get them. Whether it's because I think/thought they're style over substance, or that they are/were a little over-hyped, I'm not sure. I wasn't enamoured with their debut Litanies (on Woodsist ), but I listened to it quite a bit anyway. Weird. I'm equally flummoxed by how much I'm enjoying them right now. I find ...

  • The Lost Rivers
Northern Star Records : 'Noise infused three-piece The Lost Rivers hail from the south west German state of Baden-Württemberg yet sound as if they might have been conceived in the outer reaches of hell. Surefire challengers to A Place To Bury Strangers’ crown as kings (and queen) of sonic annihilation. Be sure to have those earplugs at the ready. Having firmly established themselves as one the most exciting rock ‘n’ roll bands on the planet, The Lost Rivers now deliver their debut album ‘Sin and Lostness.’  Drowned In Sound: "While comparisons with … earlier incumbents of such wares like Spacemen 3, Loop ...

  • Loop – Wolf Flow
Loop were wrongly attached to any scene. Steve Lamacq once said that Ride were, "the House of Love with Chainsaws". In that case Loop must be like Ride in a war zone. Unfortunately there is no plans as of yet to reissue 'Wolf Flow' Peel Sessions, which is my own personal favourite. There was much banter between Loop and Spacemen 3, but I feel that they were completely different, the only thing they had in common was a love of the work of Suicide. My first introduction to Loop was Wolf Flow. There has never been a ‘Greatest Hits’ of ...

  • Magic Castles
Magic Castles is a psychedelic folk-rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota.; Formed in 2006, the band self-released their first three albums before catcing the attention of Anton Newcombe (Brian Jonestown Massacre), who will release the band's eponymous double album through his ‘a’ Records imprint on March 20th, 2012. The band is also slated to join Brian Jonestown Massacre on an East Coast tour of the United States in 2012. Inspired by the sounds of Spacemen 3, Skygreen Leopards, and Galaxie 500, Magic Castles employ warm Farfisa drones, hazy guitars, and bright vocal harmonies to craft songs that shift between traditional ...

  • Radar Eyes, "Disconnection"
Chicago's Radar Eyes formed in late '07 and with nearly five years under their belt the psyche-rock band is rightfully due for a debut album. Radar Eyes have blessed the 7" countless times through different band members. The lack of a full length in the process somewhat explains the title of the first single, "Disconnection," on their self-titled debut. Radar Eyes play with the shoegazed despondency of Spacemen 3 or those parallelized moments dispersed in The Brian Jonest...

  • Whiteout – Bite It
The post from two weeks ago made me think about the Joiners and all the gigs I went to. Probably the most famous gig that I never went to was the Whiteout and Oasis double headliner. Back in 1994, I had become dissatisfied with the music scene with limited interest in grunge and britpop. I looked backward towards Spacemen 3 and Echo and the Bunnymen instead. My friends told me at the time Whiteout were much better on the evening than Oasis. I would have to take their word on this, as I was not there. Whiteout were from Greenock ...

Stream den nye skiva til Holy Wave "Holy Wave is a 4 piece from Austin,TX. They play a mesmerizing style of drone-y neo-psychedelia that while challenging at times is mostly pure otherworldly gold.  Sonically they may owe a bit to Spacemen 3 and Galaxie 500 , but Holy Wave remains charming with vague familiarity, honest in their presentation, and infectious enough in their down tempo take to warrant our attention."  Nate - tapebombs.com Holy Wave - Sonicbirds.com

  • Alberteen: Metal Book
Alberteen is a well educated band. Lead singer Phil Shaw is a Professor of English Literature at University of Leicester and bass player Ade Berry is a playwright and director. With John Rose on guitar they perform dark post-rock songs with a cinematic feel. The core band doesn't feature a drummer as a full member, so for the recording sessions for their debut album Metal Book they enlisted Gareth Warden . Mike Bennett (The Fall, Ian Brown) acted as producer. Only an English band could come up with a song titles like Tamogotchi Landfill and Waterloo Teeth , but are not ...

  • Loop – Heaven’s End (repost)
I am a big fan of both Spacemen 3 and Loop, and I see them totally differently. Loop's music is very minimalist music with complex layers. It is still very hard sounding with metronomic drums and fuzzy guitars. The Loop can be summed up by Soundhead thumping drums that sound like canons. Wah saturated in reverb that is so raw your ears feel like they are going to bleed. Very hypnotic and dark. While the work of other late 80s noise terrorists My Bloody Valentine and Spacemen 3 are celebrated. Loop has been forgotten. Even when the out-of-print albums ...
