  • Track Of The Day: Yalls - 'Sayfixed'
'Saxfixed' from Yalls is pretty beautiful. It manages to mix dream-pop and chillwave in a sort of Washed Out meets SSLYBY type way. It's indie, but people won't be singing along to it in a club. It's chilled out, but it's not bandcamp fodder. New genre alert: Interesto-pop. You heard it here first.

all listen buttons jump to Spotify Rarities / Subscriptions 05.) Stephin Merritt - Obscurities Compiling rarities from the 1994-1999 Merge Records years, this collection spans tracks from Stephin Merritt, The Magnetic Fields, The 6ths, Gothic Archies, and Buffalo Rome...basically all things Magnetic Fields, Merrit's solo work, and band side projects.  Instead of spending ridiculous amounts of cash on Ebay for these rare 7"s or out of print cassettes, you get everything your heart desires for under twenty bucks.  Even though the track order scatters the various groups/solo works, amazingly, the album works from start to finish and never ...

  • Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin
SSLYBY are by far one of my favourite Polyvinyl artists. Resonating from Springfield Missouri, the group started when Philip Dickey and John Robert Cardwell met in 2002 during their freshman year of college. After releasing their own split EP in 2004, they signed to Polyvinyl Records some time later in June 2006. You won’t want [...]

  • 405 Premiere: Dear Lions - 'Exactly The Same ..
Next week New Yorkers Dear Lions unveil their new EP, Lying To My Lies , and to celebrate we're premiering the first single from it, entitled 'Exactly The Same'. This song represents everything that is good about this band - with the track progressing seamlessly from the SSLYBY style indie-pop verses, into the more romantic (Smiths?) style choruses. Have a listen and let us know what you think.

  • Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin – Tape ..
Rarities compilations are almost always tricky business. On the one hand, they offer a band the opportunity to show a more adventurous side to themselves that may be lacking on their more polished final efforts. However, they can also contrarily be a mass of middle-of-the-road outtakes that are decent enough but don’t really merit shouting about. There is, after all, a reason these songs have remained unreleased. With all that in mind, Tape Club , a collection of b-sides, non-album tracks and studio demos from ridiculously-named Illinois indie-poppers Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin , poses a serious question: does a ...

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin Tape Club Polyvinyl Records [2011] Fire Note Says: The 26 b-sides found on Tape Club highlight why you should be checking out Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin. Album Review: Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin is one of those bands that I have always expected to break out but never seem to achieve a larger success with their catchy power pop. Tape Club puts an exclamation point on my first statement, as it is the new double album that features 26 unreleased and hard to find tracks from SSLYBY that didn't make ...

  • Album Review: Someone Still Loves You Boris ..
Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin - 'Tape Club' (UK Release: 17 Oct '11) // Words: Simon Opie Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin come from Springfield (Missouri), and yes there are 22 towns named Springfield in the USA but the band’s name alone surely qualifies them for a residency at Moe’s Tavern. They’ve been making music since the turn of the century, which puts them near the beginning of the indie pop fashion for simple song-making with sparse instrumentation and alt-folk melodies. 'Tape Club' which follows 2010’s well-received 'Let It Sway' is a kind of taking stock ...

How many great songs does SSLYBY have to release before they become a regular part of that Best American Bands of The 2000’s conversation? Tape Club is a triumph. • CONTEST: Someone Still Loves You Boris Yelts ..
One of our favorite albums of the year, Tape Club by SSLYBY, is set for release on October 18th and has been streaming on Bandcamp for weeks.  It's a collection of forgotten tracks from the band and includes twenty-six stunning tracks.  We're extremely lucky to be giving away something special: a very rare original tape from SSLYBY long out of print tape subscription club.  I want to keep it, but it has to go to one of you lucky readers. If that's not enough, Polyvinyl is also throwing in your pick of a vinyl (black pressing) or ...

Have we ever spoken about how much we love Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin ? I'm sure we have. Just in case we haven't, let us tell you now, we really do love this band. What Tape Club represents is just how good much talent this band has. Essentially it's a 26 track collection of rarities/unreleased material etc, but 100% full of brilliance, and very much worthy of your time. If you're a SSLYBY newbie, stick this on and be prepared to spend the next few days on spotify obsessing over their studio records. Tape ...
