  • Now Playing: Chiddy Bang Part 2
This session is no soggy bowl of frosted flakes. Nor is it a greasy sausage, egg, and cheese from your local fast food counter. What we're serving up is some honest to god nourishment, courtesy of a couple of hip-hop pranksters from the city of brotherly love. Chiddy Bang-- the stars of our latest slice of video cuisine-- has a few years of underground material to their name. But aside from their frustratingly short EP The Preview, the band have been waiting far too long to take their hip-p

  • Live Review: St Jerome's Laneway Festival - ..
With the festival circuit getting increasingly competitiv, reports of poor sound engineering and set delays could never be more damaging, however with an incredibly soggy lead up to the Brisbane leg of Laneway Festival , these problems were disappointing but not surprising. The festival organisers did well to ensure that all stages would be undercover, but unfortunately our dry vintage threads came at the cost of sound quality and atmosphere as we were herded into the RNA horse sheds. read more

  • Review: Various Artists - Tally Ho!: Flying ..
The story of New Zealand’s venerable Flying Nun label is best told aurally, writes DOUG WALLEN . “Well you said it was yesterday/Yesterday’s another day” – The Clean, ‘Tally Ho!’ Flying Nun’s 30th anniversary may have come and gone last year, but this two-disc retrospective is only reaching Australia this month. It’s both an introduction to the one-of-a-kind label and a satisfying distillation of its best bands and eras. In his succinct liner notes, founder Roger Shepherd muses on the sort of parallel universe inhabited by Flying Nun in the 1980s as well as touching on the ...

  • Ben Gibbard Likely Lying About His Running P ..
In the February issue of Runner's World, renowned jogger and occasional musician Ben Gibbard broke down his recent obsession with running marathons and sprinting around Seattle — for once hitting the pavement instead of just ripping off Pavement. In the Q&A; he breaks down chasing the runner's high, running the soggy L.A. marathon, and (cute guy alert!) losing a couple of toenails in the process. Obviously, what got us interested was when the reporter asked, "Is there a song you listen to when you really need to pump yourself up?" Says Gibbard: "Somebody on the Internet did a ...

  • 10 of the Worst Covers in Pop
This week Leona Lewis kicked up a right old stink by announcing her intention to cover the Nine Inch Nails classic ‘Hurt’ . Johnny Cash is widely acknowledged to have made the song his own on his 2002 covers album, and we can safely assume that it’s his version Leona will be bringing her toothy lung busting presence to. All the signs, literally everything I know about music, and every fibre of my being knows its going to suck worse than a rapping footballer .But Leona’s not alone in titting up someone else’s masterpiece. Pops history is littered ...

  • Megaphone Barons – Menagerie
Click image to download full album Sounds like: Built to Spill, Computerclub, Mississippi Man "Megaphone Barons - Soggy Ground" What's so good? There are ways to experience music that transcend just aural stimulation. Bands who recognize this tend to make the best albums out there, which I like to think of as “headphone albums.” Much like this year’s Life Fantastic by Man Man or Nine Types of Light by TV on The Radio, they practice that yes, if you know what you’re doing, you can project what you want beyond a simple three-way set-up (guitar, bass, drums) in ...

  • CMJ & New York City (October 19, 2011)
Portugal The Man @ Ace Hotel, NYC: photo by Michael Ligon If it had to rain, then I'm glad it was at the beginning of my trip. More thankfully, I'm glad it only rained once the whole five days I was in New York City last month. Given the rain, I was confined to mostly indoor activities. With umbrella in hand, and rain jacket on (yes, I came prepared), I took off that morning to head to the Ace Hotel in midtown Manhattan for KEXP's "Free Yr Radio" CMJ sessions, and then for whatever randomness the day could ...

  • Built to Spill bring back the spirit of 97 b ..
Ugh, I wish it was 1997. Everyone wishes it was 1997. Disregard if you hated 1997, be it through personal tragedy or simply a soggy year. For Built to Spill, though, 1997 was a very crisp year. Riding high on their third (and best maybe?) record Perfect From Now On , Built to Spill spent the year becoming the most critically acclaimed and popular band in the entire world! I have never heard of Radiohead. We all miss these salad days, but every time Built to Spill puts out a new record, it brings us back to that time. Unless it ...

Filed under: News , Video , Exclusive , Movies Courtesy UMG Joel and Ethan Coen 's landmark American tale ' O Brother, Where Art Thou? ' is about to hit its 10-year anniversary, and to celebrate, the Soggy Bottom Boys have reunited for a special homage to the movie that made them a household name. Teaming up with original cast member Tim Blake Nelson , the ole folk heroes put together a funny little video for 'In the Jailhouse Now,' featuring the band as ghostly session players amongst the dark walls of a state penitentiary. The song even includes singer Pat Enright's signature yodel.

  • James Blake Plays Toronto, Chides Contempora ..
Rainy weather aside, the atmosphere at James Blake’s performance at the Phoenix Concert Hall was one of unreserved anticipation. The crowd that filled the Phoenix was a soggy, but eclectic, mix of hip twenty-somethings, all of whom fell silent as Blake’s lanky figure took to the stage.
