Social Studies

Social Studies

Social Studies crafts intricate songs that combine angular indie rock and classic twee-pop. What distingishes the San Francsico-based group is their eclectic, complex song writing: unusual structures and mathy beats are tempered by soft edges and danceable casio hooks. Read More

  • Body Language – “You Can” [Video]
In case you didn’t already know, Body Language’s “You Can” is the fucking jam. In fact, it’s been the jam since the Brooklyn-based four-piece released their Social Studies EP way back in October 2010. The song still hasn’t left our rotation,…

Back when I reviewed Social Studies‘ set at Noise Pop 2012, I specifically mentioned a new song, “Terracur,” as a standout track. Social Studies singer Natalia told me it would appear on their new album, so I’m pretty stoked that the album is almost ready. But first, there’s a small matter of mixing and mastering [...]

  • Film Review: Hunky Dory (2012)
'Hunky Dory' (UK Release: 2 March '12) // Words: Saam Das Named after the 1971 David Bowie album, and also containing adaptations of his music, 'Hunky Dory' takes us back into the 70s and the glowing setting of the summer term at a Swansea secondary school. Minnie Driver stars as a drama teacher battling against love, teenage rebellion and a lack of support to create an ambitious contemporary take on 'The Tempest' . Whilst watching 'Hunky Dory' , it's difficult not to displace the notion that this is something of a Welsh 'High School Musical' - it follows the formula of melodrama, singing ...

Photos by Nicole L. Browner There aren’t enough superlatives in the English language to describe how incredible Wye Oak was on Friday night at the Independent. If you’re a fan of the band’s gothic country indie rock (or whatever the hell it is) on record, then you must see them live. No matter how much [...]

  • Body Language
Body Language’s squiggly, headphone-worthy electro-soul feels very... 2011-ish. Social Studies, the band’s excellent EP (with its sugary synth pads and smooth percussion), may harken back to the glistening, disco-lite pop of the early ’80s, but the songs seem linked genetically to this decade, if for no other reason than the music press’s fascination with genre trends.

Click here for download Song: Body Language - Holiday (Savoir Adore Remix) [download here ] What's so good? NYC-based quartet Body Language undergoes the remix treatment courtesy of their fellow Brooklynites Savoir Adore. The track in the cross-hairs is “Holiday,” released on their album Social Studies . The original indie-pop-dance feel of “Holiday” has been tweaked to sound a little bit more dreamy — almost hinting at a bit of M83 in nature. I actually prefer this version more than the one done by  RAC (released at roughly the same time). It’s a little less redundant, more choppy, and overall a touch ...
