  • MP3: Callers Drop “Life Of Love” From Upcomi ..
As you visit the Western Vinyl website, you’ll notice that under their logo, the statement “Thanks for listening” resides. My thought is, thanks for putting out so much great music. The label has churned out recordings by Dirty Projectors, Balmorhea, J. Tillman, Ola Podrida, Here We Go Magic, Sleep Whale..just to name a few. All [...]

  • [guest post] 2010 in Review, Vol. 7 - Botany ..
Botany is the creative outlet for Spencer Stephenson, and his brilliant debut EP, Feeling Today , was released by Western Vinyl this past summer. I kid you not when I say that it has been one of my most listened to records over the past 3 months – something I can put on virtually every day and not tire of. The title track is gorgeous, shimmering electro/pop - found sounds, vintage samples, and just enough natural instrumentation to keep the song grounded in reality as it soars upwards. The other four tracks are equally as impressive and habit-forming. With a full length ...

  • Botany – “Agave” (Stereogum Premiere)
Texas musician Spencer Stephenson (who also played drums for Sleep Whale) makes lush instrumentals under the name Botany. I’m a fan of all the tracks on Botany’s debut EP, Feeling Today, but “Agave” was the first to catch my attention. I love the way the elements here (music box tinkles, ghostly samples, rhythmic detritus) combine [...]

  • "Feeling Today" / "Waterparker"
Denton, Tex. indie pop group Sleep Whale has spawned a number of intriguing little solo acts, like Motherly, Sunnybrook, and now Botany -- formerly known as Abacus. Botany's Spencer Stephenson takes the same sense of melancholic melody present in Sleep Whale and spins it into the electronic realm. Tracks "Feeling Today" and "Waterparker" weave simple melodies through gentle keyboard drones, and both have a tendency to shift into a different direction when you're not quite expecting it; peep when the vocals drop on "Feeling Today." Dude doesn't even have any tracks on his MySpace yet, but he's ...

  • Botany

  • Track of the Day: Botany–Feeling Today
Botany is Spencer Stephenson (formerly known as “Abacus“, currently the drummer from Sleep Whale), from Weatherford, Tx. He has an EP, Feeling Today, due for release by Western Vinyl in about a month, with a full-length to follow that (featuring J. Tillman, among other collaborators). Today’s offering is the title track from the EP, featuring [...]

  • News: Ola Podrida Kick Off Tour, Get Remixed ..
Ola Podrida kicked off a long-awaited US tour this week in support of the outstanding "Belly of the Lion." The tour launches with a hometown show at Mohawk in Austin before taking David Wingo and a full band to the East Coast and back. A limited edition "Belly of the Lion" vinyl will be available at the shows.

  • Sunnybrook//Lobby
Sunnybrook is Paul North, a Denton musician who is also a member of Sleep Whale . And his solo project, which has been his focus since before he joined the group, deserves attention in its own right. But the comparisons are hard to avoid, as Sunnybrook’s songs are, much like Sleep Whale’s, ethereal and lush, taking electronic instrumentation and making it sound organic. “Lobby” is the latest song from Sunnybrook, and we are fortunate enough to debut it. The song is dizzying, lovely and magical, with layered vocals, loops, echos and hand claps. It’s reminiscent of early Collective ...

  • Giveaway: Tickets To See Sleep Whale at The ..
Sleep Whale , who run in circles with the likes of Sunnybrook and Abacus, are just one of a handful of homegrown bands who have caught the eye of local tastemaker Chris Cantalini and his beloved Gorilla vs Bear blog , and in turn the esteemed Pitchfork --who always seem to pay close attention to Cantalini's tastes--have featured the band as well. Wondering what all the hype is about? See for yourself in person when the band takes the stage at The Loft on May 9th. And you can do so for free if you send us an email that with ...

  • Class Actress – Journal of Ardency EP [Mix T ..
This week on the Mix Tape we have got Brooklyn band Class Actress, who bring excellent 80s infused beat driven dance jams with great female vocals. Definitely harkens back to the new wave bands of the 80s, with Elizabeth Harper bringing great emotional vocals with real presence and style, reminiscent of Karen O or [...] Related posts: Deleted Scenes – Birdseed Shirt [Mix Tape Monday] Mix Tape Monday – 4.28.08 Mix Tape Monday: Electric President Sleep Whale – Houseboat [Mix Tape Monday]

  • The Guestlist w/ Sunnybrook
There comes a time in every younger sibling’s life when they must decide to either step out from the shadow of an older brother or sister, or risk being forever known as ______’s brother/sister. When Peyton Manning won the MVP of Super Bowl XLI it looked like Peyton’s little brother might never have that opportunity –that is until he did the very same thing exactly one year later. Last season those “Eli is Unstoppable” watch ads were some of the heaviest in rotation. So was the case last year with Paul North, whose Sunnybrook project emerged ...
