[guest post] 2010 in Review, Vol. 7 - Botany ..Botany is the creative outlet for Spencer Stephenson, and his brilliant debut EP, Feeling Today , was released by Western Vinyl this past summer. I kid you not when I say that it has been one of my most listened to records over the past 3 months – something I can put on virtually every day and not tire of. The title track is gorgeous, shimmering electro/pop - found sounds, vintage samples, and just enough natural instrumentation to keep the song grounded in reality as it soars upwards. Botany's Spencer Stephenson takes the same sense of melancholic melody present in Sleep Whale and spins it into the electronic realm. Tracks "Feeling Today" and "Waterparker" weave simple melodies through gentle keyboard drones, and both have a tendency to shift into a different direction when you're not quite expecting it; peep when the vocals drop on "Feeling Today." News: Ola Podrida Kick Off Tour, Get Remixed ..Ola Podrida kicked off a long-awaited US tour this week in support of the outstanding "Belly of the Lion." The tour launches with a hometown show at Mohawk in Austin before taking David Wingo and a full band to the East Coast and back. To celebrate, Spencer Stephenson, drummer for Sleep Whale and the man behind the project currently called Abacus, worked up a remix of "Belly of the Lion" track "Monday Morning." Sunnybrook//LobbySunnybrook is Paul North, a Denton musician who is also a member of Sleep Whale . And his solo project, which has been his focus since before he joined the group, deserves attention in its own right. But the comparisons are hard to avoid, as Sunnybrook’s songs are, much like Sleep Whale’s, ethereal and lush, taking electronic instrumentation and making it sound organic. “Lobby” is the latest song from Sunnybrook, and we are fortunate enough to debut it.
