  • DeLorean: Outdoor Miners - "Twelve Hundred D ..
2009: Outdoor Miners - "Twelve Hundred Dollars" by Devin Friesen on 05-22-2012 “Everybody, pay your rent.” Maybe it translates more subjectively in text, but the preceding statement takes on a sort of reassurance as the hook of “Twelve Hundred Dollars.” Vaguely ennui’d in delivery, it’s a small part of a song that should be a year-round anthem for the functioning slacker archetype, as if to say: yeah, stocking shelves is a bore, but it pays the rent – besides, we’ll all get to hang out soon, right? The production on the first Outdoor Miners single is a bit murky ...

  • Catcall / Palms / Woe & Flutter
Alhambra Lounge - Thu May 17 The evening begins with a smattering of punters, mostly opting to loiter around the bar or smoke outside, interrupted by the young noise of Gold Coast group Woe & Flutter. They are tuneful and easily digestible, but their genre flipping from slacker rock to pop punk to Dandy Warhol stoner glam suggests that all the best music has already been written, leaving Woe & Flutter to play around the fringes. In contrast, Palms stick to a groove early on and they do ...

  • This Week's Best Album Streams: 18th May 201 ..
It's been a week of feuds. At The Great Escape it was whether electro-pop or the good old guitar affirmed their place as 2012 dominant force; with phenomenal shows from The Black Bells and Haim matching NZCA/Lines and Aiden Grimshaw –yes the X Factor one - it's a draw. The battle was mirrored is album stream land, with jaw dropping previews of Niki and The Dove, and Best Coast. This time, Malin's and Gustaf's electro anthems beat Bethany's slacker riff hands down. Equally decisive was the latest remarkable war between Fun Lovin' Criminals and Kenickie ...

  • A Familiar Yet Refreshing Sojourn Down Sonic ..
I have had Television Youth , the ace record from Canadian punks Sonic Avenues , in my inbox for months (it came out in January). I was meant to post about it for The Styrofoam Drone (amongst a plethora of things - sorry Zac, I'll be back on top of things in the upcoming week!), yet it fell through the cracks (expect to see the Happy New Year/Nite Fields split 7" soon though). This is a great album though, and it has jumped on my hunched back and beat me around the ears insistently this week, so I thought I better ...

  • Deceptive TANK All About Nostalgic Slack And ..
Bands choosing simplistic monikers to disappear in a Google camouflage is a double edged sword. On the one hand it means you aren't pandering to the man . Yet for those genuinely interested in finding more, it's a massive flipping of the bird. Brooklyn band TANK certainly stay under the radar, but this is an absolute shame as their six-track self-titled EP is pretty killer, and deserves to be picked up by all and sundry. Let's start off with 'Assorted Reactors.' TANK cast their Pavement pogs into the ring from the get go. Yet there are other connections ...

  • Floored By Unity Of Women's Golf
This has been out for some time - last year I think - but seeing as Sydney's Unity Floors has only just come to my attention in the past month, I think it's safe to talk about it anew. Besides, it's very likely that anyone outside of Sydney will have heard their excellent 7" Women's Golf , which is a goddamned shame, because it is one of the best slices of slacker pop to come from Australia for a few years - and there has been some excellent rock releases delving in this territory from this fine land recently. It ...

  • Jacob Turnbloom – The Front Steps
By Chris Gedos “The Front Steps”, by Mrs. Magician singer / songwriter Jacob Turnbloom, displays a startling versatility on the part of the San Diego, CA native. The song, part of Jacob Turnbloom’s Death Tapes, a limited release of various bedroom recordings, is properly rooted in the reverb-core / slacker tradition. Gripping from the first [...]

  • WHITE FANG Announces Full U.S. Tour; New Alb ..
Portland, Oregon’s resident lo-fi freaks, White Fang have announced the release of the June 19th vinyl release of their new full-length 'Positive Feedback' via Marriage Recs (Dirty Projectors, tUnE-YaRds). Locked away in their make-shift rehearsal space with instruments and mind altering substances over the past several years, White Fang has delivered a deluge of four track lo-fi masterpieces. It’s music that encompasses melodic bedroom slacker pop, skate-ramp punk ragers, concert parking lot psychedelia and avant-garde rock. All of which is delivered with a high level of creativity and musicianship but also a ramshackle abandonment to pristine production quality ...

A Bag of Hammers Dir. Brian Crano [MPI Media Group; 2011] by gammareay Rating: In the first scene of director Brian Crano’s A Bag of Hammers , Alan (Jake Sandvig) begins to ask the question, “Who would win in a fight—” But before he’s even had the opportunity to name the opponents, Ben (Jason Ritter) immediately replies, “Ultimate Warrior.” Alan complains that Ben hasn’t heard the options yet so he can’t answer, but Ben stays firm: regardless of who is fighting, Ultimate Warrior would win. This game continues throughout the next few shots as the characters stand ...
