A real classic of this age: Ryuichi Sakamoto’s ‘Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence’ — played by the master himself. I wasn’t even sure if he still performs this song live.

Kazu Makino of Redhead">Blonde Redhead has announced the release of Works In Progress, a 15-song benefit album to support Japan and it’s ongoing efforts to heal post-tsunami. Born in Kyoto, Japan, Kazu’s love for her home country is strong. She wanted to help her homeland and turned to her friends and colleagues to ask that they donate tracks for the album. The response was unbelievable, and Kazu has collected an amazingly cohesive group of songs. Kazu said “It is so ironic that an event so devastating can allow me to do something that is so inspiring” Proceeds ...

  • James Blake: "Left & Right" - James Blake re ..

  • CFCF "Exercise #3 (Building)"
Taking a brief break from his usual disco-inclined production, Canadian producer CFCF has put together a mini-LP of sorts, one that's surprisingly made up entirely of sprawling, piano-based compositions inspired by the hybrid pieces of Phillip Glass, Ryuchi Sakamoto, and other such artists. The eight-song effort, Excercises (artwork above), is said to show a much more introspective side to CFCF than we're used to seeing, but if "Exercise #3 (Building)" is any indication, the songs will likely yield some rather enjoyable results. The full mini-album is still a ways out from dropping, as its release date is April ...

  • CFCF : Excercise #3 (Building)
CFCF dives into a extremely intellectual and moody realm with his latest mini-LP, “Excercises”. CFCF channels Steve Reich, Tangerine Dream, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Philip Glass into this latest release. Definitely a surprising and refreshing track from a producer such as CFCF. • Music Review: Christian Fennesz & Ryuichi Sa ..
Christian Fennesz & Ryuichi Sakamoto Flumina [Touch; 2011] by James Parker Rating: Flumina is the third collaboration between Christian Fennesz and Ryuichi Sakomoto. And it’s much more in the vein of 2007’s Cendre than their live outing from a few years before that, Sala Santa Cecilia . Where Sala Santa Cecilia was a lush and noisy record, constantly shifting between dense electronic clatter and distorted quiet, Flumina is overtly ambient: a subtle dialogue between Sakomoto’s artful piano meanderings and Fennesz’s atmospheric fuzz. In fact, Flumina is a ‘concept’ or ‘process’ record in two senses. First, because each of the 24 tracks is ...
