  • Review: Rinse Presents “Roska 2″
Roska has been at the forefront of the UK funky scene for a while now, from his work with Rinse he has found the perfect collaborator in his quest to explore and expand upon his already considerable expertise in UK dance music, this has demonstrated itself in his upcoming release Roska 2, his first record [...]

  • Spanner In The Works: Roska
"Shorter tracks, more vocals, a shift in tempos and smoother flows", says Roska of his forthcoming second album on Rinse recordings, a project he has been itching to put out since the release of his self-titled debut album back in 2010. Still regarded as one of funky's chief standard bearers in many quarters, it has been interesting to see Roska's sound take on something of a new persona over the last 18 months. Whilst stylistically still laden with funky influences, Roska 2 is a record of not only great progression but new and powerful ideas; strikingly, the only ...

  • FABRICLIVE 63: Digital Soundboy Soundsystem ..
Digital Soundboy Soundsystem are set to take control of the latest FabricLive mix. Amid the tumultuous trends of bass culture, Digital Soundboy remain at the forefront. Led by Shy FX, a new generation have picked up on their Jungle output at the same time as the imprint forges a relationship with new producers. Strangely, Digital Soundboy have never released a commercial mix. All that is about to change, though, with the Soundsystem set to take charge of a new FabricLive compilation. FabricLive 63 will be released on May 21st, and reflects both the history of the imprint and its current ...

  • ZINC RELEASES VIDEO FOR GOIN IN
Author:  James Waldron Category:  News Summary:  Rinse crew raid supermarket for new tune from the 'crack house' don 'Crack house' don Zinc is back with new single 'Goin In', and an accompanying video. The video features vocalist Sounds of Emotion alongside cameos from the whole Rinse family, including Brackles, Skilliam, Roska and even a bored-looking Katy B as a shop attendant. The crew rampage through said supermarket, having a whale of a time in the process. Theresa May probably wouldn’t approve. 'Goin In' follows on from Zinc's recent successes with vocal tracks like 'Wile Out' and 'Louder'. It ...

  • Funkystepz - Royal Rumble [EP]
Diversity isn't a quality often attributed to Funkystepz releases. They're more known for exploiting typical London, funky sounds and 4x4 drum patterns; and, most importantly, doing it well. The Royal Rumble EP, however, seems to have something a little extra. It is still undoubtedly a trademark, bassline, dancefloor release; but in areas the production does seem to surpass orthodox templates, with an impressive subtlety. What is more, without a vocalist on the release, there is an added necessity for each track to offer something different. There has to be a notable, and in-depth, progression throughout the EP to ...

  • Beacon "The World is Quiet"
Color-drenched, tropical-tinged dance music inspired by the likes of UK funky stalwarts DVA and Roska seems to be making its way back into the fold, as evidenced by this gritty jam from British producer Beacon . With a new three-tracker set to drop on Four40 , Beacon offers up non-EP cut "The World Is Quiet," a paranoid and skittering production buoyed by ascending kettle tones and a nefarious, creeping synth line. The beginning of the tune reminds us strongly of the work of Hessle Audio's Joe ( "Untitled" and "Grimelight" in particular), hissing ominously as the beat builds into a shuffling furor ...

  • Lorca - Can't See Higher
On a good day for promos, I found myself marvelling how much of this music malarkey is based around luck.  On the nearfield monitors chez Panhead Studios, which reward the brave (and scorn the timid), this little promo might well have passed me by.  Bit polite maybe.  But since I was listening on the headphones I got in exchange for my air miles the other year, I found myself quite entranced by the waves of synth work, the rolling textures, the depth of the subs, and the way that all this was layered over beats that are a cut above ...
