Roll Deep

Roll Deep

England

Roll Deep are a MOBO Award-nominated London-based grime music collective. They were founded in 2002, by a group of MCs including Wiley. Roll Deep were also closely associated with Boy Better Know with members in both. Their debut album, In at the Deep End, was released in June 2005. ... Read More

  • Last Japan "East feat. Trim"
Filtered bass drones fly in overhead on this new tune from Last Japan , which features the distinctive drawl of London's Trim . Apparently his final record before cutting an exclusive deal to work on a debut full-length with Rinse, the Roll Deep member hops to and fro over a shiny, chromed-out half-step beat. The rhythms descend into the gutter on the back of those aforementioned bass drones, finding the track's soft spots and attacking with the reclined, but metaphor-twisting flow Trim is known for. Last Japan's instrumental provides a suitable backdrop for the MC's mystical, London-sage style ...

  • Son Raw: Flow Dan says nothing
Son Raw comes from a distopian future You might remember Flow Dan’s booming baritone from The Bug’s best tracks and if you don’t, you should probably check out London Zoo – AKA the only album that can give Funcrusher Plus a run for it’s money when it comes to distopian cityscapes. The Roll Deep member’s… Continue reading »

  • Roman Shower: What Inspired Nicki Minaj's In ..
This week, Nicki Minaj dropped the cover to her long-awaited sophomore album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded , a neon splatter of paint and make-up like Flock of Seagulls got in a knife fight in a Toys R Us. SPIN editors wracked our brains trying to figure out what inspired this Technicolor massacre. Duran Duran's Rio cover?: It's got the same love of sharp angles, steely glares and heavy make-up . Plus it was born the same year as Nicki! Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome?: And speaking of sharp make-up, there's a bit of a post apocalyptic vibe to this, maybe ...

  • Wiley, 'Evolve or Be Extinct' (Big Dada)
A few years ago, Wiley tumbled headlong into the much-mythologized major-label grinder, and he's spent the past few years trying to piece the meat back together. In 2008, on the Asylum-released See Clear Now , the seminal grime MC/producer scrubbed himself clean with a stretch of pop-baiting, commercially successful singles — including Mark Ronson- and Hot Chip-produced tracks that had nothing to do with the frozen-solid, icepick-sharp road music upon which he'd built his legacy. To hear Wiley tell it, the album was a disastrous fluke dictated by the label, so he pulled a 180 to supposedly clear his ...

  • Dollars to Pounds: The Proper Ornaments
There’s a saying around some parts of east London: the Totnes massive roll deep. Actually I’m probably the only person who says that, but it’s true. Totnes was known, if at all, for its pot, … read more »

  • Track Of The Day 23/1 - Wiley
There's just no stopping Wiley . The Grime pioneer released two albums in 2011, and opens 2012 with one of his finest full length documents yet. 'Evolve Or Be Extinct' is out now on Big Dada, with the MC able to condense his overflowing imagination into something subtle, distinct and direct. However even those commitments can't keep Wiley away from the studio. The MC recently stepped behind the mic for another session with long time Roll Deep members Flowdan, Riko and Manga. The stripped back rhythms amount to little more than tribal drums and the occasional snare crack, but ...

  • Wiley - Evolve Or Be Extinct
Wiley’s latest cobbling together is infuriatingly irresistible. Asteroids-playing beats are knocked out in lunchbreaks, rhymes do as they damned well please (even that title sounds muddled) and there are concepts that are complete non-starters. But Eskiboys will be Eskiboys. When Wiley does get his head down he’s hard to stop, a start-middle-ending conciseness to most infused with some weird black magic thing that nags you into going back for more. And you do. Whether it’s promoting bedroom dancing or going for another Roll Deep crossover, like the football team that doesn’t play well but still gets ...

  • R.I.P. Conscious Daughters Rapper Special On ..
MTV Rap Fix : The world of music and the Bay Area hip-hop scene, in particular, lost a Special One this weekend. Karryl Smith, half of the East Oakland-bred group the Conscious Daughters, better known as Special One, passed away on December 10. Her cause of death is unknown at this time. As the Conscious Daughters, Smith and Carla Green (aka CMG ) were a breakthrough act in the early Nineties, a pair of street-smart and fly ladies who rapped as relentlessly tough as any of their male counterparts. Buoyed by the singles “Somethin’ To Ride To (Fonky Expedition)” and “We Roll ...

  • Roll Deep - Picture Perfect [Single]
On first listen, I wrote off the latest single from Roll Deep as nothing more than proof. Proof that all their releases now merge into one extended discourse about big nights and seizing the moment, whilst making a statement about the central importance of House-style synths and formulaic female...
