  • Livin' the Dream
Reed KD is following a dream. It takes guts to do so. And I can't word it better than what's he's got on his official press release about the track "Space Vacuums" off of his latest When the Comet Comes : " 'Space Vacuums' was written at a crossroads in Reed's life that most can identify with: the pressure of growing older, finding a job and settling down. Reed took a different path. He quit his job, bought a van, started his own record label and set off across the country. He says, "There's no mystery on ...

  • Reed KD – In Case The Comet Comes [Album Rev ..
You might not have heard of Northern California resident, Reed KD, because he’s an unlikely blog darling. His music is not groundbreaking or experimental; that is to say that Collective">Animal Collective fans may find him boring. His lush harmonies are immediately palatable and his sound has been compared to the likes of Paul Simon and [...]

  • New Tunes: Reed KD
Here’s a good first impression: Reed KD out of Santa Cruz, California. Right up my alley, really. Uptempo, spirited, folksy & rootsy. The bass drum makes me think of Zeppelin’s “Bron-Y-Aur Stomp”, and his voice sounds juuust a bit like Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses. Something about the annunciation. I dunno. I dig this one. Hear: [...]

  • REED KD-”In Case the Comet Comes”
In the spirit of great indie, Reed KD’s debut album, “In Case the Comet Comes,” was recorded by Reed KD, mixed by Reed KD, performed by Reed KD . . . You get the idea. He makes folk/Americana, writing whistful songs of longing and love, and singing them in a straight-ahead, Earthy style. [...]

  • Who's House? Reed's House!
Guess who's back?  Yep, Mr. Reed KD with his infectious folky americana songs!  He's giving away a song from his album In Case The Comet Comes .  It's a nice upbeat little number called "If The Tide Swings."   Kelly over at The Gobbler's Knob has a good write up about his album.   Check it .  As he so correctly put it:  " In Case The Comet Comes is quite the find for those of us who like our our folk to bounce to a peppier tempo than your standard “storytelling folk...” MP3:   Reed KD - If The Tide Swings [ purchase ...

  • Reed KD: In Case the Comet Comes
Reed KD: In Case the Comet Comes June 9th launches the career of Reed KD. The musician spent most of the last two years living out the back of a van, traveling across the country. When he finished his sojourn and found himself back home, he set out to put his music down to recordings using some microphones and his laptop. Family and friends assisted him by playing other instruments or just banging away on whatever was available. The album was completely done by Reed himself, and recorded just about anywhere but a studio. Its released through Dirty Laundry Records ...

  • CD Review: Reed KD, “In Case the Comet Comes ..
Two things happened to the producer’s lot when home recording went digital. We’ll cover the second later on, but before the laptop and PC, home recorders used cassette machines that utilized 4, 6 and 8 tracks on the tiny width of a store-bought Maxell tape. To increase the amount of tracks, you’d have to “bounce,” [...]

  • Muppets Take Cactus Garden
A few weeks ago I hipped you to Left Coast folkie and Laurel Canyon-like troubador Reed KD .  He's just put out his video for "Cactus Garden" his new album If The Comet Comes.  (That title keeps making me think of Night of The Comet.)  It's a nice bluegrass ditty accompanied by a fun, Muppet-like video.

  • Reed KD - In Case The Comet Comes
The new album from California’s Reed KD, In Case The Comet Comes is quite the find for those of us who like our our folk to bounce to a peppier tempo than your standard “storytelling folk” likes to typically. The album’s opening tracks, “This is It” and “If the Tide Swings” display some pretty gnarly [...]

"Winding Roads" - Reed KD      Imagine Ben Folds singing lead for Simon & Garfunkel and you'll have a fast idea of what "Winding Roads" sounds like. The melancholy guitar-picking and sweet vocalizing is definitely a throwback and/or homage to S&G; in their heyday, but I also love that the tenor voice here feels rounded and confident (i.e. Foldsian) rather than wispy and introverted. Given how many 21st-century singer/songwriters seem birthed straight from the forehead of Elliott Smith, I for one am delighted to hear a guy who sounds like he could belt out a pop song if he wanted to, but doesn't want to.      Another delight here is the exquisite and involving melody. Paul Simon's melodic gift was crucial to the S&G; vibe, and so ...

  • Reed KD: In Case The Comet Comes
Singer-songwriter Reed KD has an address in Santa Cruz, CA, but changes are that he is driving around in a mini van to play and record a fresh of batch of songs, because that is what he did in 2007 and 2008. His new album In Case The Comet Comes is a musical travelogue about Winding Roads , Hippie Chicks and Space Vacuums . The fast rumbling drums are up front on most tracks, which might lead to speeding tickets when you pop it in your car audio player. It is an "on-the-road" album that goes places. Simon and Garfunkel get a ...

  • Left Coast Folkies
I'm not really sure what happens to folk music once you go west of the Rocky Mountains that makes it sound so peaceful.  But, whatever those California liberals do to get that peaceful, easy feelin' is alright by me. Reed KD is another in a long line of folkies to come out of the Terminator state that produces lush harmonies with intricate work on the ol' string instruments.  His harmonies a thick and lush like the work of The Mamas and The Papas and Simon and Garfunkel.  Like the name of the song, it actually sounds like a trip ...
