  • Week 60: R. L. Burnside (First Recordings) ..
There’s nothing somber about today. I actually had a pretty fantastic day but today the music is going in a heavy bluesy direction because if I don’t tell you guys about R.L. Burnside I might go crazy. I could have featured The Black Keys (they’ll get the spotlight eventually) or some other modern blues-influenced band but I want to feature an artist whose music will instantly take you onto the dusty Southern roads you might only have seen in the movies and whose music is as soulful as it gets.  Robert Lee Burnside is no longer ...

  • THE EASY - OFFS Mean Trouble.
@ facebook // interwebs // reverbnation  // CD Baby // iTunes The Easy-Offs are a couple of men from Montreal that our man in Texas turned us on to. By "us" I mean me.  Listening to their new album Life Is A Drone you'd be hard pressed to gather that by "a couple" I don't mean a whole helluva lot more than two. They do have a some friends helping out on a few tracks, some fuzzed-out bass on this one, some harp and/or backing vocals on that but for the most part, and regardless this is  just good ol' raw, dirty ...

  • Blues For Your Pocket
A nice blues compilation I seem to have had in my collection for ever which came out in 1972 on the Transatlantic label. I think I must have bought it new for the princely sum of 19 shillings and 11 pence! Has some great artistes on it including Son House, Furry Lewis, Jazz Gillum and Bill Broonzy">Big Bill Broonzy. Wikipedia says of Memphis Slim - "Memphis Slim's birth name was John Len Chatman, and he was born in Memphis, Tennessee, United States. His father Peter Chatman sang, played piano and guitar, and operated juke joints, and it is now ...

  • R.L. BURNSiDE - Going Down South - Live - 19 ..
Devin Miller writes: "I recorded the audio on a $25 mini-jambox I bought at Sears, so forgiveness for the lo-fi and modulation. Musicians with R.L. including 17-year-old Cedric Burnside, Kenny Brown, and Dale Beavers (on bass). This was the second time I saw R.L. and one of four. The visuals is Super 8 film I shot that day (actually the first film I ever shot in my life). Then projected against the wall and captured with my Canon 5D Mark II for digital capture. No post processing or filters used other than cross dissolve and timing." Kudos to ...

The label Fat Possum have announced they will be releasing the soundtrack to American cult TV comedy Eastbound and Down . The double album is out April 24th, and will feature songs from the show as well as some of its most memorable quotes, such as "when my ass was 19 years old, I changed the face of professional baseball. Everyone wanted a piece of my shit. Just a man with a mind for victory and an arm like a fucking cannon. But sometimes when you bring the thunder, you get lost in the storm." @ Bandcamp // Facebook Turchi is Reed Turchi, boss of North Carolina's Devil Down Records who brought you the new Kenny Brown double-disc set, the Bill Ferris recordings of Mississippi Fred McDowell, a new release by long-time Junior Kimbrough sideman Little Joe Ayers, and a couple other very worthy works. • R.L. BURNSiDE - 1926 - 2005 - A Rememberance ..
Thanks to Charlie Humphrey of Old Gray Mule for calling my attention to this piece. Posted here without permission from Charles Russo . It has come to pass as a particular sort of historical irony - both poignant and peculiar - that one of the last great southern bluesmen died on the same day that Hurricane Katrina tore through the Gulf States. R.L. Burnside passed away at the age of 78 in a Memphis hospitable bed, just one of many chapters that came to a close on the morning of September 1st. More so than even the geographic relevance, blues music was ...

I have a drawer full of cds that deserve better than to sit gathering dust. I intend to get to them one of these days but as the man said, The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions. • Guadalupe Plata
Guadalupe Plata is a rockin' and rollin' dirty blues trio that hails from Ubeda, Spain. Pedro de Dios Barcelo handles the guitar and vocals, Paco Luis Martos wields the washtub bass, and Carlos Jimena keeps time on the drums. Their devilish, rhythmic rock and roll draws inspiration from legendary American blues artists such as John Lee Hooker and R.L.Burnside, with the madness of Screamin' Jay Hawkins, the sweet sound of Tampa Red, the killer slide guitar of Elmore James, and the essence of Son House. The band kicks out on instrumental blues chock full of slide guitar. The ...
