Q and Not U

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Q and Not U was a Washington, D.C. post-hardcore band from 1998-2005, signed with Dischord Records. Their sound, with fractured guitar leads and disorganized and inventive percussion, was a direct tribute to DC post-hardcore forefathers like Fugazi and Rites of Spring, but added noti... Read More

  • PropertyOfZack Playlist : : Koji, Kurt Travi ..
Koji, Kurt Travis, and Bearcat just recently finished up a full US tour with Never Shout Never. The tours over, but we’ve put all three artists together for a great new PropertyOfZack Playlist feature. Check out the Playlists and listen to the songs on Spotify while reading everyone’s thoughts! (Click on image to listen in Spotify) IT’S SPRING TIME. SOUTHERN MUSIC IS WHAT’S GOOD. First thing you should know, my favorite singer is—without a doubt—Otis Redding. “Dock of the Bay” is one of the first songs I ever heard, ever learned. Secondly, B.B ...

  • Celebrate Ian Mackaye's Birthday with Nugget ..
He’s probably laughing at us. From eMusic : You know everything about Ian MacKaye that there is to know. You can probably sing along to all the songs on the Minor Threat discography and have memorized ever lyric on every Fugazi release. You might own the record he did with Ministry-backed Pailhead, stuff from his early band The Teen Idles, projects like Egg Hunt, Embrace; or releases from the handful of bands he’s produced from Bikini Kill to Q and Not U. But you know what? Today is MacKaye’s birthday, and since the guy is one of the ...

  • Former Q and Not U Members Writing New Mater ..
It’s been a good end of the year for fans of Washington, D.C.-based punk. First, Fugazi released a massive catalog of live shows, and now it’s been reported that a few members of fellow Dischord dance-rockers Q and Not U, which broke up in 2005, have been writing songs together.

Remember them? From Washington City Paper : Earlier today, Erica Bruce posted about yesterday’s acoustic John Davis show, where Q and Not U alum and current WaPo pop critic Chris Richards joined his former bandmate for a couple of tunes. Davis mentioned at the show that they had written a slew of songs together, and today he confirms via email that the two have been at this for about a year… Read and comment. From thedailyswarm.com.

  • Love Among The Mannequins - Love Among The M ..
I think we can all agree that since the split of Meet Me In St. Louis back in 2008, there’s been a very large British post-hardcore hole in our hearts. There hasn’t been a band since that have been able to cook up the same dish of utter pandemonium a record like Variations on Swing was packed with. But what happens if the man who fronted it, joins a new band and puts out a record on the label who delivered them to us in the first place? Then folks, you get the self-titled debut from Tobias Hayes ...

  • Friday Five: Songs From Yesteryear
This post might come off to you as super depressing and/or super sentimental, so I apologize and/or you’re welcome. There have been many bands who’ve come and gone without much notice, but then there were those bands that announced their break up and you weeped for a few days straight with their best album on repeat (No? Just me? Oh…). You know this is an ominous fact that’s bound to happen to most of your favorite bands (unless they’re from the 60s/70s; the drugs were different then). It’s something that we all ...

  • Grooms – Prom
Click image to download full album Sounds like: Q And Not U, Sonic Youth, Minus the Bear "Grooms - Tiger Trees" What's so good? It’s so refreshing to come upon a newer band who is taking their music in a different (and slightly unknown) direction. Grooms is a noise-rock band based out of Brooklyn. I, for one, love both Grooms albums, but their sophomore release, Prom , is filled with wonky twists and angsty turns that have the ability to intrigue you only five seconds into a song. It’s obvious that they do what they want with their musical ...

    1. Title Tracks - "All Tricks" (Title Tracks is the project of John Davis formerly of Q And Not U and Georgie James. His second album In Blank , out now on The Ernest Jenning Record Co., again showcases his knack for a super-catchy power-pop hook filtered through the spirit of punk rock, but he has put together a band this time instead of playing every part himself and mixed the album in mono for an authentic sound. The album also features a great cover of the Flamin’ Groovies song, “I Can’t Hide.”) http://titletracksdc.blogspot.com/ Download: http://www.ernestjenning ...
