  • First Spin: Grab Plants and Animals' 'Song f ..
During a show at Pop Montreal in September, Plants and Animals introduced a fiery cover of Wolf Parade's "I'll Believe in Anything" thusly: "This is by one of the first bands that ever took us out on tour and showed us how to rock, as it were." If the latter part of that statement is in fact true, then we have one more reason to thank the now-defunct Montreal outfit. Because over the years, Plants and Animals' knuckle-balling blend of indie rock has been a vibrant, constantly rewarding reminder of their hometown's mid-aughties moment. "Song for Love ...

"Lightshow" MP3 from the album The End of That 2012 iTunes BY ERICA MATLIN | Jonk Music Plants and Animals' upcoming February 28 album, The End of That , is actually the beginning of, what appears to be, an incredible year for music. Their new single, "Lightshow," is captivating in the sense that it combines both classical rock elements and more modern indie-alternative. As a new listener to this Montreal-based band, I felt like I've been missing out on something great the moment Warren Spicer and Nicolas Basque began to strum their instruments. These guys are the driving force behind the ...

  • HT Interview: Plants and Animals
Rarely will a band come around that encapsulates the full spectrum of what we try to do here at Hidden Track. As purveyors of improvisational music, indie rock, Americana and general open-mindedness, there’s a very short list of bands who embrace those same interests in one fell swoop. However, Montreal-based Plants and Animals are one of those rare anomalies. [Photo by Caroline Desilets] Taking their latest standout album, The End of That , as case in point, Plants and Animals take sharp sonic turns from track to track, embraces instrumental experimentation, writes concise and distinctive songs, and pull from endless ...

  • Listen: Plants and Animals – “Lightshow”
This past week, Plants and Animals released a single for their upcoming album, The End of That, out on February 28th. One thing that makes me become obsessed with this band time and time again is the wide variety of songs they have. Throughout both of their albums La La Land and Parc Avenue, there is just [...]

  • Plants and Animals – Lightshow (Secret City) ..
French-Canadians Plants and Animals’ last album, 2010’s La La Land, was criminally overlooked by the press upon its release, perhaps because of its similarities in style to the successful debut by Local Natives, released a few months previously. For their third album The End Of That (pictured) the band haven’t decided to change much, sticking with what worked so well on their previous effort but polishing up some of the rougher edges. Recording was done in Paris, but the sound is very much in line with some of the better indie music to have come from the other ...

  • KUESTIONNAIRE: Plants and Animals
Some of you may have heard 2010's touching and true classic rock revivalist album La La Land from the brilliant Montreal act Plants and Animals . For those of you that haven't, it's about time you hop on the band-wagon. In addition to their fantastic live shows, the band has this uncanny ability to craft songs that roar and rock while still emoting the feelings of joy, loneliness, and personal freedom. The End of That , which comes out February 28, 2012 comes the closest to bridging the gap between the disorder, rock adventure, primal infusion and gushing sing-alongs ...

If his tweets were any indication, Michelangelo Signorile dedicated his entire radio show yesterday to the question of Cynthia Nixon’s sexuality. That’s weird. It’s true that the public loves a good riff on some variation of the is-she-or-isn’t-she question, but in this case, we know . Cynthia Nixon is gay. She has a girlfriend. She isn’t hiding anything or campaigning against gay rights or donating millions of dollars to the Mormon church to help defeat same-sex marriage. The how or why is better left to the scientists, but the what — that she is an out lesbian ...
